As many of you know, I have been accused by others as having “gone to seed” concerning the Biblical truth of IMPUTATION because I often emphasize the Gospel truth of how the sins of God’s elect were imputed (charged, accounted, reckoned) to Christ for which He justly suffered unto death on the cross, shedding His precious blood to pay their debt to God’s law and justice, and how the righteousness of Christ has been imputed to the elect for their justification and from which they receive all the blessings of God’s grace in salvation (2 Corinthians 5:21). All of this was done in order that God be both just and the Justifier of His chosen people. God is both a just God and a Savior (Isaiah 45:21; Romans 3:21-26), and this is God’s glory in Christ!
Due to the fact that this blessed and glorious doctrine has been so misused, confused, and even denied, I want to tell people over and over again how vital and important it is to our understanding of salvation, justification, and the basic message of the Gospel of God’s free and sovereign grace in and by the Lord Jesus Christ. The psalmist David described “the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,” when he wrote in Psalm 32, “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin” (Romans 4:6-8). To put it into perspective, consider the following – All who appear before God in judgment having sins imputed or charged to their account will be eternally condemned. All who appear before God in judgment having sin NOT imputed to them but having Christ’s righteousness imputed or charged to them will be eternally saved by His grace in Christ – “Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, Who is even at the right hand of God, Who also maketh intercession for us” (Romans 8:33-34). My prayer is this – “Lord, when others deny, confuse, or disparage this beautiful and Christ-honoring truth, keep me focused upon Christ in His glorious Person and finished work for us so as to glorify You in our justification by Your grace based on the imputed righteousness of Christ which is the ground of our justification and the source of life in Him.”
