Louisiana state law doesn't recognize martial law. They can declare a state of emergency that doesn't seem to be much different from what I can tell.

I posted what I found here.

I will concede that a disaster beyond human comprehension has happened. I will also concede that a it's disaster beyond our abilty to prepare.

We could have prepared a much better levee system for New Orleans.

We could have been much better prepared to stop looting.

We could have been much better prepared to assist those who would be stranded in the city due to economic reasons, health reasons, in the hospitals, etc.

This has been a colossal failure of government on all levels.

I'm just surmising here, but I wonder if this actually had something to do with it. Perhaps we were so busy focusing resources on manmade disasters that we tended to allow the issue of natural disasters take a back seat. Not that anyone is to blame, just a thought about all of us in general.

    We, we, we.

Why am I responsible for the levee system in Louisiana? I barely knew it existed. The people of Louisiana and New Orleans bear the primary responsibility for the welfare of their citizens. They should have taken care of the problem years ago instead of waiting on me and you to foot the bill.

    Carpro,

I agree with you but many people feel it is the governments job to take care of them. It would not surprise me one bit to see someone sue the state of LA for not providing a safe environment. I am not kidding, either!!!

I fully expect a flood (no pun intended) of lawsuits to follow.

Maybe the Feds can do like they did after 911; pay the relatives of everyone that dies a couple of million dollars to stop them from clogging up the courts for the next two decades. :(

I just do NOT understand when people will quit trying to find an easy way to make a buck. There has got to be someone sane enough to stop the insanity of these type of lawsuits. This hurricane was an insuance company would call an act of God. How in the world can these people possibly sue? Unless it is God they want to go after, that is.

BTW, the flood of lawsuits was funny, IMHO.

We, all of us who are citizens of the United States, are all in this together. It would have been much cheaper to spend the money, as a nation, to have prepared the levee system over the years and to have prepared the supplies for an emergency than what this is going to cost us, as a nation, now.

Plus all of the wrecked lives for months, if not years. Plus all of the deaths in hospitals, shelters, etc.

What I DON'T want to see is our tax dollars going for is to rebuild the City of New Orleans in it's present location!!! The city will ultimately be abandoned, evacuated of the living, and empty, so forget about it. Who wants to live in a house or work in a building where human feces stood in it for days and weeks? Burn it to the ground to rid the place of bacteria and vermin and then let the water take it over to reclaim the land. NOLA was a cesspool of wickedness and sorcery anyway. It would be utterly foolish to consider rebuilding New Orleans, kind of like trying to rebuild Atlantis.

I suppose when the major earthquake that is going to come hits the New Madrid Fault or the San Andreas Fault or when the tsunami hits Seattle that it will be the Federal Administration's fault.

I fully expect the Battle of Armageddon to be George Bush's Fault as well!

    Good Grief!

    Hardsheller,

Well of course it is. Haven't you seen the accusations that this is all because we asked Israel to give back a piece of land?

I find it as absurd to blame a hurricane on the administration as you do.

If we want to "blame" people, let's blame the National Hurricane Center that waited until Friday to say, "Better move."

Maybe we should elect our local leaders on their knowledge of history & city planning, instead of those who fight to keep abortion mills open, and who lobby for gay marriage....

No one on the BB has blamed Bush for the hurricane. If they have, please provide the thread or the quote.

What Bush IS being blamed for is the inadequate, inefficient, uncoordinated, and untimely response to the disaster victims and securing law, order, extraction, and aid.

I believe FEMA is under his watch. And so is the military/national guard.

The first food in the area was from Baptists Red Cross and Salvation Army. News reporters were able to get into the area okay and crews.

So, how come it took the Feds so long when they were warned in advance about a Category 5 hurricane headed for NOLA?

I guess when someone worships/idolizes a leader, it isn't proper to question anything they do or fail to do or hold them accountable.

    Good Grief.

Brother Curtis, the Mayor of NOLA officially welcomed the Southern Decadance Convention for the third year in a row. The big event was supposed to start 2 days after the hurricane struck and last for a week. I can't describe what all goes on during that event on this family board.

That is what will happen, LE, although it may be slimmed down version. And it should be rebuilt. There are lots of refineries and petrochemical plants, etc., there plus the port is the largest based on tonnage in the U.S.

That is totally irrelevant to this discussion about the failure of the federal government.

    True.

People are still on the same bridge without food and water that Shep Smith (from Fox News) was pleading for help for two days ago. Some have died and are dying as we speak. Police and National Guard have driven by, but no aid for these people sitting on the bridge for days...some are elderly and babies. No one has told them where to go. They sit there. They sleep there. They bake there in the hot sun with no water. No instructions. No food.

    In America. [IMG]

I don't know how much more of this I can watch. It is too heavy to see all of this in the streets of what used to be the Greatest Nation on Earth. [IMG]

They are saying the number of dead in NO may be over 10,000. [IMG]

I cannot believe you are joking at a time like this! If I recall the majority of the people who received money after 9/11 were WHITE. You obviously do not understand the plight of these people. You obviously do not believe that racism exists in this country. You have obviously never seen the "ghetto" or have seen how people live in the inner city. These were working people, but people who were working low to minimum wage paying jobs. not everyone was on welfare as I have seen alluded to, or jobless. I also realize that you must not realize that there are MORE WHITE people on welfare than black. I can guarantee you that these people are not worried about suing. They are focussed on staying ALIVE. I am offended by some of the replies on this board.

As far as the constitution goes. The Federal gov has a duty to provide for the "general welfare of the United States" under ART. II sec. 8, it is again enforced under the 14th amendment.

There is no use to argue over state supremacy. The fact of the matter is that all government failed these people. Local and State officials were unprepared, and after being asked for assistance the Federal government failed these people.

For those of you who are so concerned over breaching states rights, I hope that your state never endures such a catastrophic disaster or a terrorist attack of this magnitude. Your state already receives money from the Federal gov. to plan for disaster and for security, and they WOULD expect more after disaster struck.

They might not be worrying about it right now, but wait till the lawyers start handing out their cards to those who have been displaced.

I never said a thing about this being racist that I recall. I said that I watched a man on tv saying it was racist.

As far as those WHITE people on 9/11, I don't think the government should have paid them either. Why is it that if a tragedy befalls anyone they sue? Whether this month or next year.

So, are you saying that because most of the people affected were black that it racism?? If I am not mistaken, there were also people of other races that are among those in this tragedy.

Does LA get some of this money or are they excluded?

BTW, sorry that I use humor as a way to deal with horrible situations.
