I always assumed that Jesus was a darkly tanned Jewish man!

I agree. But when I think of all the paintings I've seen of Him I tend to think they depict Him as white. Then again, here's one I remember:

It is true that many times He has been presented as basically a White Male, as remember one where he was also blue eyed!
