KEMP SUPPORTS ROBINSON

Dear Fellow Conservative:

During my many years as a Republican leader in the United States Congress, as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, as your nominee for Vice President, and as a leader of Empower America, I have had the opportunity to meet and work with many great conservative leaders with progressive ideas for the 21st Century.

My good friend Vernon Robinson is one of the finest of those leaders. A true Ronald Reagan Conservative, he has led the fight for school choice, less government spending, and pro-growth tax cuts in North Carolina for many years.

The Wall Street Journal has called Vernon "the next Black Republican Congressman," and noted that his election to Congress from North Carolina's 5th District will help fill the void left in the Republican Party by the retirement of J.C. Watts.

During his two terms as an elected member of the Winston-Salem City Council, Vernon has consistently fought for lower taxes and less wasteful spending. This has resulted in a substantial reduction in Winston-Salem property tax rates, even though the City Council is majority Democrat. When re-elected, he became the first black Republican re-elected to partisan public office in North Carolina since Reconstruction.

The son of a nurse and a Tuskegee Airman, Vernon served his country as a Missile Combat Crew Commander after graduation from the United States Air Force Academy.

United Press International says Vernon is "the early favorite" to win the seat. If elected, he will be an articulate spokesman for both the Republican Party and conservative causes. That's undoubtedly why one newspaper described him as "a black Rush Limbaugh".

I believe that Vernon's race is one of the most important congressional elections in 2004. He is a remarkable candidate who deserves our support, and I thank you in advance for helping this great American and terrific candidate get elected to the U.S. Congress.

Jack Kemp has a rather liberal track record. I know nothing about Robinson, but would have to at least question "conservative" advice from someone like Kemp.

Sue: "Progressive" is a buzz word among socialists and communists, which they use to describe their values. They know that the terms "communistic" or "socialistic" would not be received very well by most Americans. I have to wonder about so-called conservatives who are comfortable with that term.

Roy: I am a conservative and when I think of the word 'progressive', I certainly do not think of it in terms of communists and socialists.

I really find it hard to believe that President Bush would be backing men who had a secret Communist agenda.

The homosexuals stole the word 'gay' from us. Now the Communists are trying to steal the word 'progressive'.

I am so tired of words, that I have used all my life, (and their original meanings) being hi-jacked to mean something bad...

Progressive is a good word and it is fitting and proper for most discussions, but I cringe when I hear a politician using it because of it's appeal to the left. I just tossed my comment into the ring so that conservatives who are unaware could pick up on it and not be deceived by our "progressive-thinking", liberal politicians.

Roy, thank you for the information. I certainly was not aware that progressive had become a 'bad' word when used by politicians. I will be more watchful in the future.

These terms can be confusing. But I do have a question, was George Washington a Conservative (ie keeping things the way they were) or was he a progresive liberal?

I honestly don't know what George Washington would have been labeled during the American Revolution unless it was rebel or insurgent. We do know that he was deeply devout and was unashamed to give God the praise for all of his successes and to remind troops, citizens, and legislators of the nation's need for divine guidance.

Example #1: Letter to Governors of States - 1783

"I make it my earnest prayer that God would have you and the state over which you preside, in His holy protection; that He would incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; to entertain a brotherly affection for one another, for the fellow-citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethern who have sowed in the field; and, finally that He would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, without an humble imitation of Whose example in these things we can never hope to have a happy nation." Example #2 - From Washington's Farewell Address:

"Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligations desert the oaths, which are the instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason, and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle."

George Washington

If he were alive and in the public eye today, George Washington would be hated and ridiculed worse than any public figure ever has been for expressing his purely Christian convictions.

I know he wouldn't qualify as a liberal today, and neo-conservatives would be trying to distance themselves from him as well.
