Lacy, I agree. I was not very clear there at all.
I think that when Jesus said that unless their righteousness exceeded that of the Pharisees, He knew that the people thought of the Pharisees as those who diligently strive to follow the Law, and hence they would realize that they could not be saved by following the Law, and would turn to Him.
