I'm with Johnv on this one!

But once the people are saved---I would kinda like to see how close they can relate to the demonic man of Gadera who---after contact with the Lord Jesus Christ was:

"dressed and in his right mind"

    Johnv,

Im sorry, I honestly thought it was more of a rhetorical question.....

First off, if a bunch of people were walking around stark naked they'd be arrested for indecent exposure....even in today's America. BUT, if they started undressing and it became apparent that they were trying to disrupt by their actions, than I believe we'd call the police and/or ask them to leave and come back when they can keep their clothes on.

Our pastor often says...."Come dressed with what you have, but please, come dressed!" [IMG]

But see! Here's what grabs me by the horns and won't let go---

You visit a person---and they say

"I'd be there Sunday but I don't have nothin' to wear!"

I generally come back with something like

"Whats wrong with what you have on now?? You can wear that can't 'cha???!!"

I have no problem with dress styles---wear what you want to wear---but you'll see me in a suit on Sunday mornings and nights and casual dress on Wednesday.

Now---concerning a poster who mentioned the strip club dancer who was recently converted and was still wearing "slim" fittin' clothes ;) ---you simply get some of your godly ladies aside--tell them that you want them to teach that woman how to dress like a lady---she'll soon "catch on" and start dressing like those godly ladies do!!!

I may be entering the realm of hair splitting here...

Some of the above examples (girls in tight tees, etc.) are indicative of someone's dress causing another to stumble in the area of lust. No questions from me here.

I don't know how a guy wearing a sports jersey or not tying his shoes is dishonoring to God...at least not in the same context as the girl & the tight tees.

We have to be careful when we start lumping too much together.

Actually I've found in some churches that my suit is drawing looks.

An assist. pastor came to me and said something about how sharp I looked. He followed the, I'm taking it as a compliment, with "You make me look like a slob."

Not sure if my silence was golden or painful for him

I think we should start a church that requires a tuxedo, tails, and a top hat. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Yes, for one thing public nakedness is illegal.

Golly Gee, sorry you have a tail you need to cover up, a suit coat would do as well as a tux I'd think.

Most congregations would go for the top hat when I'm around, would cut down on the glare. :D

Exscentric, I had to respond to your comment about your suit "drawing looks".

I was a member of a local Baptist church (not Southern or Fundamentalist) for over 25 years. In that church, in the last fifteen years, not only had suits disappeared, but even wearing of ties. About the only people that wore a suit or tie were the pastors, and perhaps some of the ushers. In the adult Sunday school class I attended, I always knew when the two or three men in the class who ushered were doing it that morning, as they had on suits (they didn't wear them other Sundays). In the last ten years, you could not wear a suit (or even a tie) in that church without taking flak from other men as to why you're wearing one, unless you had a "special" reason.

Your comment about the pastor saying that you were making him look like a slob, made me chuckle. Imagine an immoral woman, dressed provocatively, walking up to a modesty dressed Christain lady, eyeing her up and down and saying "You're making me a look immoral!"

Probably like you Exscentric, I wouldn't have said anything, sometimes just silently looking them in the eye gets what you're thinking across to them!

I certainly don't expect the unsaved to come to church wearing anything more than what they normally wear during the week. In my opinion, they should be welcomed just as much as if they are in jeans, T-shirt and tennis shoes.

I think Christains have a bit of a higher calling; not $500 suits on every man, but you shouldn't look like a slob either.

I'd like to feel I have a little consideration towards all the people at church that are going to have to look at me. I've never owned a $500 suit or even a $300 suit. I do wear at least a dress shirt and slacks, and a tie on Sunday morning. While I don't often wear a suit, I'd like to be able to if that is my choice.

Since I do have a job where I wear a dress shirt and tie daily, it's no big deal for me to put one on Sunday morning. But, if I lived somewhere like rural Wyoming, where it was not uncommon to shovel out the horse stalls and step through the mud to get to the barn, what I would expect to see worn on Sunday morning church would be different.

Closest to a $500 one I've got is a $200 one that I bought on deep closeout where I worked and got my employee discount as well - $75 or so as I recall about twenty years ago :D

And the opening hymn would be "Puttin' on the Ritz".

Maybe you ought to take that inot contextual meaning first? next thing you know, you'll be promoting a works slavation by the washing of hands, that is expressly spoken against in Hebrews 6 leaving the doctrines of baptimsms.

No, we would go immediately to our clothes closet finsding them something less revealing to wear, being nice as possible. If they refused to put on something to cover their "buck nekkedness" they would leave, even if by police escort due to the nature of their visiting anywhere undressed like that.

We have many times handed girls and boys alike in the bus ministry some clothes that covered more. None have ever refused, but they have asked to take their pick of the clothes we suggested. they understood! They respect us more than ever before for the effort!!!

Salamander, I thought you said your church didn't have minimal dress standards, and that everyone was allowed to comas as they were.

Like I said before, it isn't biblical to exclude anyone from worship or fellowship because you don't approve of their clothing. But it is certainly not unbiblical if a church has a nominal "shirt and shoes required" standard.

I said we don't have standards for visitors, but the laws of our state do prohibit total nakedness, get real!

Where in the Bible does it say not to wear baggy pants or sports jerseys? Where does it say to always tie your shoes? I wear baggy pants because I find tight pants constricting and uncomfortable. I don't always tie my shoes - especially high-tops - because I like be able to flip them off easily. Unless you can show me the chapter and verse that tells me not to, I will continue to do so.

Catch-22. Pants can't be too baggy, nor can pants be too tight! I guess everyone should get your pants vetted by Ron before wearing them in public.
