Some do misuse the term, but the term does not mean anything negative. You do realize the left is trying to make the term "patriot" mean an anarchist who is trying to organize the taking up of arms against the Govt.

A Nazi was a particular form of nationalist. Nationalist is not a bad thing. Certain extreme nationalists are.

I personally look at things from a Constitutional “we the people” prospective. That makes me uniquely American ( citizen of the United States). Nationalism as I see it is in lock step with Constitutional principles.
