Alcohol

Is it wrong to take alcohol for medicinal reasons? If it is good for your blood or calms nerves for instance? Or should we baptists stay clear of alcohol for any reason? I'm not condoning drunkeness, but what about a drink or two just for better health?

Not if you're a Baptist

If you go fishing and have beer, always take two baptists. If you take only one, he will drink all your beer, if you take two, neither one of them will drink. :)

There's nothing wrong with imbibing alcohol.

With that, I thus leave this thread....and will peer in to watch it devolve to a pointless bickering match about an issue that isn't foundational or doctrinal and is merely peripheral.

Recommended by Paul for this reason.

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

As Baptists, we all know it's much better to take pills, right? On this subject, there are people I know that are on so many medications, no one really knows how to figure out what their symptoms are and what their side-effects are.

When I hurt my back some time back, I didn't get better until I took myself off the prescription meds. God bless them, but doctors don't have time anymore to pay attention to their patients. That's what many of the pills out there are all about.

Perhaps simpler is better. Paul's simple instruction makes sense in some situations.

Having said all that, I don't drink - simply because as a Pastor, I know it would tend to cause some in the congregation to "stumble."

<Homer Simpson voice>: "M-M-m-m-m-mmm NyQuil"

Had some last night. For medicinal purposes, of course.

I have a friend who is the king of malaprops.

He said once, "I don't drink, but I do have a glass of wine occasionally for municipal purposes."

By the way--Nyquil is my friend.

Wine IS a mocker

Strong drink IS raging

Fools are deceived thereby.

Just because one does not drink to "intoxication" as established by government, does not negate the first two statements as to the character an nature of intoxicants. One is still a fool if they hold that wine is not a mocker and strong drink is not raging, and that these are not characteristic of the believer that is filled with the Spirit. Wine and strong drink are anti-Holy Spirit for the Holy Spirit does not mock (make fun of) nor rage (out of control personality) but establishes one in their "right mind." It matters not how much or little one takes of an intoxicant. The sole purpose is to gain control of that person, and is therefore not of Christ.

Medicinal use is permitted; the example of Paul writing to Tim, assumably under the guidance of Dr. Luke., positions the authority is granted under a doctors care, authorization and oversight.

However, It is important to understand that Tim obviously abstained from intoxicants or Paul would never have had to give him permission.

There are some on the BB who would find any permission and excuse to take in an intoxicant, but the testimony and Scriptures do not support that the believer is to be a partaker of intoxicants other than with the medical professional oversight.

One of the longest (if not the longest) running threads on the BB has been about intoxicants, and it runs true with just about everything on the board, no one is going to change their mind no matter what "proof" is offered.

I don't know about that. I used to be total abstinence, but found the position to be un-Biblical.

Yupp!!! Something like that:thumbsup: All who condemn the moderate use of alcohol are deluding themselves....The miracle of Christ at the marriage of Cana is simply unintelligible if you are a tee-totaller. It is signifigant, powerful, and moving, if you understand that "wine" is "wine". It is unintelligible if the host of the feast says something to the effect of:

Jhn 2:10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good Welch's; and when men have well drunk, {of Grape juice } then that which is worse: [but] thou hast kept the good wine [otherwise known as "high-quality Welch's"] until now.

The tee-totaller notion no longer deserves the peacable and respectable disagreement it has been given.....it deserves the scorn and abuse it has caused on people...No one has a right to push blatant ignorance, and ascribe it to Jesus Christ, it no more deserves honest debate....it deserves derision as the patently un-Scriptural and un-Biblical position it is. It is provably false, and only the father of lies could possibly be convincing them of it... I mean that very literally. At this point, only the very Father of lies himself could reasonably continue to create such an obstacle to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It should no longer be tollerated, it is anathema to the Scriptures, and those who preach thus, do so falsely. They are to be removed from fellowship. Their missionaries no longer should be supported, their seminaries, to no longer be attended... They have become IMO a hinderance to the Gospel, and a denier of Biblical truth. And I suggest that those of you who do support such missionaries immediately withdraw your support. Feed, no longer the beast, give them no more support to continue preaching lies.

Allow me to explain...I spent 3 years as a professional wine Sommelier, and believe me, I know what it means to say...according to the Scriptures: Jhn 2:10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: [but] thou hast kept the good wine until now.

At this point, only the intentionally ignorant can POSSIBLY, take that to mean anything other than it does..........There REALLY is such a thing as GREAT wines....and their REALLY is such a thing as bad ones, and I have spent many hours discussing with Godly Christian friends of mine how absolutely WONDERFUL it will be (in Heaven) to really taste the quality of the wines God might have in his vineyard, how much of a joy it would be to "dress and keep it" and to possibly share with the Saints the savour of something so precisely well managed, and precisely well kept, as the vineyards God might have in Heaven, and the joy it will be to render it to him a sacrifice.

I promise you, only tee-totallers and those who have yet to be exposed to a quality explanation of fine wines, do not undersand what it means when one speaks of the perfection of a good wine's structure, it's balance, and its bouquet. It is truly an art. It Glorifies God Almighty when one might render quality work to him...Christ did this at Cana, and he will allow those of us who want to tend his vineyards for him in eternity, to render him the same honour. The honor to tend and keep his vineyards, to render unto him the best of our labour, to render unto him the best wine, with the ultimate in balance: between it's flavour, it's structure, it's balance of acidity, it's body, it's smoothness, and it's bouquet (it's scent)...it will be a sacrifice of praise to him....and I pray, I might work in it some time. It is, my friends, I promise you, a very real miracle when Christ made...nay, Christ CREATED.... ex nihilo from mere water.... The Finest Wine, ever tasted, and I am only marginally ticked, that I never tasted it here....I demand he give me but one glass in heaven.

What if I have one of those FlexFuel cars that can burn ethanol as well as gasoline? E85 ethanol is basically legal moonshine with 15% gasoline mixed in. Is it a sin to burn alcohol in one's car?
