If the "except clause" permits remarriage from an adulterous spouse, why does Jesus say the man who marries the innocent divorced woman is an adulterer? She was divorced from an adulterous husband. This would also make the innocent woman an adulterer.

Dave, there is no Christian who truly surrenders all. The Apostle Paul clearly shows us he hadn't fully done so as evidenced in Romans 7. To say "I surrender all" to God is to boldly lie in God's presence. It is to be like Peter, before the crucifixion and make false promises to God. They were well meaning vows, but Peter failed miserably in fulfilling them. Are you better than Peter and Paul in your self-righteousness?

Dave you don't seem to grasp the basic grammar of the verse. If one spouse commits adultery, the other spouse is permitted, according to Christ, to divorce them and remarry.

I suggest, if you claim sinless perfection, you have just lied and thus not surrendered it all to Jesus.

You cannot surrender your sinful make-up. But you can surrender obeying it. Martyrs surrender all, but unless you are willing to die upholding Christ's words about loving instead of killing enemies, you cannot fathom it. I did this long ago and live a life free from the fear of death. Jesus indeed separates the men from the boys.

Understood, but it's not written that way. It doesn't read, "All to Jesus I wish to surrender..." If it read that way, I could sing it without thinking "sorry God, you know I am lying."

So many of the hymns are man-centered and full of bad theology. It is appalling when I go through the hymn book of my youth.

Actually I don't think it is bad theology, it's not a theological statement, but it clarifies what the song is or is not talking about. You have made it something the song is not actually dealing with. It truly is a song of dedication.

It is an assertion coming from bad theology. I think you are attempting to sentimentalize the song, but the verses present another story, one where the singer cannot mean what s/he is saying.
