These issues were brought up by Vice President Gore during the 2000 campaign. He urged that Social Security be put in a "lock box" meaning that we stop spending SS funds for other purposes. He was laughed at for saying this. Back then we still had a very favorable age distribution. Now, the first Baby Boomer has retired at age 62. It's just about too late. To rectify the situation as this suggests now requires that SS and Medicare be cut for current retirees as well as future Baby Boomers. That's the "Great Generation." They're the ones that have made out like a bandit on all this.

I must respectfully disagree with both you and Carpro on this. It is purely speculation to say what someone would or would not have done. The truth is that the Bush administration has been a failure, as was the Carter administration back in the late 70's. Ineptitude is not limited to either ideology.

Ineptitude? Government learned long ago that it could do anything it wanted so long as it's actions were preceived as ineptitude by the mass media hypnotized masses.

Just the increase in the size of government by more than 50% alone since Bush Jr. took office shows how the state benefits from it's "ineptitude". Not to mention the increase of the power in the executive branch, increased police and domestic spyng powers, the repeal of habeas corpus, warrantless searches...etc.

Everytime the state does something "dumb" it's power and funding and control over us increases. Why should it do smart things?

Doesn't matter who says it, still bull excrement. Annual excess SS funds have always been replaced by govt paper and used to pay for current budget items. Propose an alternative. Would you have the SS administration buying American companies by playing the stock market? And then the govt (Bush?) votes the stock? How long would it have taken for the SS admin to control the entire economy?

Speaking of Social Security, it is easy to see why those near retirement would not trust a private account invested in the market. Look at what has happened lately. The market has only started its plunge, and may take years to recover.
