Winfield Scott is an unsung hero as far as the first part of his career up to and including the Mexican War is concerned. By the time of the civil war however, he was too old fat and sick to make much of an impact

Other great generals - 'Black Jack' Pershing and Thomas Jackson have already been mentioned

    B-G - have obliged you!

    Yours in Christ

Thanks Matt. On the Civil War, Scott (in his late 70s) was certainly not capable of leading the army, but he did author the Anaconda Plan, which was the strategic plan which defeated the South. It is amazing that he lived until 1866 and stayed on active duty right to the end.

    Greatest general? U.S. Grant.

Of course, Stonewall Jackson likely was the most spiritual of all...

And I think Ike should get 'honorable mention'.

I think Scott would have to be a good pick for the top 5. His contribution to the Mexican or Civil wars alone would be enough to mention but with both he is a great choice.

What about modern era generals? Does anyone think Schwarzkopf or even Powell deserve mention?

How about Creighton Abrams? I have always been a big fan of his. Here is a line from his obit,
I know that the Vietnam war was not the U. S. Army's finest hour, but given the problems that he had I think his leadership was great and it was his plan that eventually got us out of that conflict. His service during WWII was definitely heroic (Bastone) and he served well in Korea also.

Of course he already has a tank named after him so perhaps being in the BaptistBoard top 5 is not that big a deal.

    EGG ON FACE.

How'd you like to be an Administrator THAT CAN'T READ!

I missed the "American" part in my lauding of Dayan. Now Golda was a good Milwaukee girl, but Moshe . .

CHANGE MY VOTE TO THOMAS "STONEWALL" JACKSON

For taking the Union army on a 800-mile trail of pillage, burning, and rape through Georgia and the Carolinas in 1864-1865?? </font>[/QUOTE]Just wanted to see what fire I could stir up (pun intended).

Seriously, Stonewall Jackson has this Yankee's vote.

I think an honorable mention should go to Maj-Gen. Anthony McAuliffe, for the sole reason that follows:

On December 22, Hitler sent a message to American Major-General Anthony Mcauliffe, at the Bartongre Garrison, telling him to surrender. His response to Hitler's request was simply "Nuts!" On this same day, skies cleared up, and reinforcements were sent by airdrop to the Bartongre Garrison, and Allied airplanes began their attack on German tanks. Then, on December 23, Americans began their first counterattack on the southern flank of the Ardennes "bulge".
    (from http://campus.northpark.edu/history/WebChron/World/Bulge.html)

That's a piece of Americana right there.
