Ancient Modern Worship

I am familiar with a church whose worship is style is described as "ancient future." In many ways, it is a typical church with contemporary/modern music. However, they also incorporate traditional/liturgical factors - where you might think you are in an Episcopal or Catholic church. For example, they have OT and NT readings each Sunday with responses ("This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.") They always sing the doxology. They even follow the church calendar. BTW, this is a Baptist church.

Is anyone else familiar with this style? Just wondering.

"8. We believe that Baptist worship should be anchored in Holy Scripture and informed by the liturgical practices of the historic church. We believe that Christian worship should be Word-centered. In worship, we read, preach, sing, pray, and show forth (through the ordinances) the Word of God. We further believe that Baptist worship could benefit from incorporating historic practices such as lectionary readings, the liturgical calendar, corporate confession of sin, the assurance of pardon, the recitation of scriptural and historic prayers (especially the Lord’s Prayer), and the corporate confession of the faith (expressed in the ecumenical creeds and other confessional documents)."

Here is a good reason why I would prefer this type of worship . . . when i go back to California and visit one of my friends' "bible church" and keep waiting for ANY scripture to be read.... still waiting... oh, half a sentence... waiting.. still waiting... lol

Well, it seems like us Catholics just might have been on to something regarding having a liturgical style of worship all these many years. Welcome to the club!
