Another Candidate for SBC President

Reported today by Baptist Press:

TAYLORS, S.C. (BP)--South Carolina pastor Frank Page confirmed May 19 he will allow his name to be placed in nomination for president of the Southern Baptist Convention to set forth a choice in cooperative missions methodology.

"It is so," he told Baptist Press. "I can certainly confirm that I am going to allow my name to be recommended in Greensboro," where the SBC's June 13-14 annual meeting will be held.

Page joins Arkansas pastor Ronnie Floyd in, now, a two-man contest for the convention presidency.

Asked his reasons for entering the race, Page said, "Obviously, number one, is, I have a peace from the Lord about it, that I have been seeking and did not have until this morning, that it was OK [to be a nominee]."

Second, he said, "I think it is healthy for our convention to have a choice....

"It is [a choice] about methodology," Page said. "I just believe that it's time for people to not only say they support the work of Southern Baptists, but to show it. And I hope that my candidacy will bring that discussion to light."

Page has been pastor of First Baptist Church in Taylors, S.C., the past five and a half years. "Our church gives over 12 percent to the Cooperative Program and we have a huge missions program on top of that, so we believe that one can do both. And I think that's a model that I would like for people to be able to consider."

The Cooperative Program is Southern Baptists' channel for supporting state, national and international missions and ministry.

"I want it to be very clear that it's not about theology -- we're both conservatives," Page said of himself and Ronnie Floyd. "It's not about personalities. I love Ronnie Floyd and think he's a wonderful man."

Page said he had not yet determined who will place his name in nomination at the convention when the election is held June 13.

Prior to accepting the pastorate at Taylors, Page had been pastor of Warren Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga., from 1991-2001; of Gambrell Street Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, from 1987-91; and LaFayette Baptist Church in Fayetteville, N.C., 1981-87. He has served on the executive boards of the South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina state Baptist conventions.

He is the author of a book titled, "Trouble with the Tulip: A Closer Examination of the Five Points of Calvinism," released in 2000 by Riverstone Group Publishing.

Page's information for the most recent year from Southern Baptists' Annual Church Profile survey, 2005, for the Taylors congregation lists 66 baptisms and primary worship service attendance of 2,079. The church gave $534,683, or 12.4 percent, through the Cooperative Program from total undesignated receipts of $4,297,861. According to the ACP, the church's total mission expenditures were $1,461,950, including $161,527 for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions and $62,726 for the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions.

Page earned a Ph.D. in Christian ethics from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth in 1980 and an M.Div. there in 1976.

He taught as an adjunct faculty member at SWBTS in Christian ethics from 1976-80 and in personal evangelism from 1987-91 and was an adjunct faculty member in pastoral ministry at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary's extension center in Augusta.

He is a native of Greensboro, N.C., who was saved at age 9 at Southside Baptist Church there.

Page and his wife Dayle have three grown daughters.

I don't care how much he gives to the CP. Pass. The last thing we need right now is another inflammatory arminian in a leadership position.

Thats a good one Joe, I didnt see much from you like that about Floyd.

My guess is that Page has a good shot - fairly local, good reputation in that area, solid conservative and a big giver to the CP.

Lets see if the busses start running again.

Is Floyd an inflammatory arminian? If so, we don't need him either. I would much rather have Al Mohler personally.

I am also guessing that he is part of the Dilday crew seeing as he graduated twice from Southwestern during his tenure and then taught at the liberal bastion of Southwestern during the 1970's, 80's, and early 90's. Yet another reason to pass on this one. Won't somebody please nominate Al Mohler?

Why don't you nominate 'im, brother??

Get on the "horn"(telephone)and just tell 'im you're gonna nominate him---he's not that difficult to get in touch with

I'll be in Greensboro that fateful week----I don't look for an overflow of distant travelers, though----the plane tickets are costing me through the "Wa-goozler" to get to Greensboro

But let me ask a question!! Why is it---that the first thing that comes into consideration when a person is placed in nomination----is his "Frazzlin'" track record with the CP??

"His church gives ______ %!!"

This is why I'm in favor of JBot's candidate, Al Mohler-----he doesn't have "braggin'" rights on the CP nor on #'s of baptisms---and whatever else they use as a yardstick for qualifications!!

I'd love to be at the convention that week just to see what happens, but our church always takes our large number of staff. If I come stand outside, will you pass me notes 'bout what's going on blackbird??? ;)

mcdirector, I assume that as in years past, the convention proceedings can be viewed live at sbc.net

I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

This may be a reasonable alternative to standing outside and having notes passed to you.

Well darn, dh! That will take all the fun out of it!

Actually, I hope to be outside at least once to meet my son who will be there.

Well, now....whatever you do, don't miss out on the fun!

I am still undecided on two issues....

1) Whether to attend the convention or not. This year's cost of travel is almost prohibitive. If I do go, it will be a last minute decision.

2) The addition to Page to the slate of nominees for president has caused me to re-think my choice.

One thing has been missing from all the discussions I have read on BB regarding the SBC presidential election. That is the matter of prayer for God's will to be done. I am praying that God's will prevail in this election.

I am not spending any time wringing my hands and biting my nails over who the next president will be. Regardless of who it is, the sun will rise the following morning and the work of the Kingdom will continue to move forward...even the SBC's part in that Kingdom work.

Several reasons:

1. I am pretty much a nobody in the convention. I probably couldn't even get inside the door let alone make a nomination if I were to go.

2. There is no way that I could afford to go right now even if I could go.

3. My church generally does not send messengers...as a matter of fact, I can't remember them ever doing so and I grew up in this Church.

4. I will actually be working during that period of time...you know the myth about teachers having 3 months off during the summer? Isn't true for band directors.

I heard this the other day and it makes sense to me:
If this next Pres gets reelected (most likely) his term will run out in 2008. So a new president could be elected for 2008-9 and 2009-10. Do you know where the SBC is in 2009? Louisville. Do you know what seminary is celebrating 150 years in 2009? SBTS. That being said, your wait might not be long.

Now, I have less than 0 inside into the convention, so I'm not saying this is something that is being discussed. It was just something that was brought to my attention the other day. It seems logical to me.

Um, yeah... Every student of Southwestern who graduated during Dilday's presidency is a carbon copy of Dilday.

That makes Ronnie Floyd part of the "Dilday crew" according to your logic.

...and then taught at the liberal bastion of Southwestern during the 1970's, 80's, and early 90's.
Even most of the trustees that fired Dilday and Ken Hemphill who came in as his replacement didn't think that Southwestern was a "liberal bastion".

Please reign in the baseless rhetoric.

One of the stated reasons that they terminated Dilday was because of his politicking - guess, PP, Mohler and Aiken have to go next!

Dilday was never accused of being a liberal, for good reason HE IS NOT!!

I'll give Joe this though - he is good at stirring the pot!

I have never heard Mohler ever talk about personal discipleship. So has he personally discipled anyone?

Some of the idiot trustees at the time accused him of liberalism. Later, his book on the inspiration of scripture was removed from the library. I read it before it was and there was nothing to indicate any liberal views. The accusations against him were lies. **Edit** **Information unverifyable** Personally I think they are all rotten with just different labels on the outside as disguises.

Nah...he does not believe in Discipleship...just politics, power, prestige and taking over the world!

**Unverifyable information deleted** So much for the conservatives. Personally I think they are all rotten with just different labels on the outside as disguises.

**Insult removed**
