Bought for years (including most of my keyboards over the years).

Sold my first item this week.

IN a couple of weeks, I'll be selling a "biggie." We're building a new building and moving just about everyone to new locations on our campus. We get a new Fellowship hall & kitchen out of the deal. Thus, it falls on me to sell some old stuff...including a steam table (warming table, buffet table, etc.) Probably a $700-800 dollar item. ALso getting rid of church "clutter" we no longer need. That's been kinda fun.

 

I'd have bought your keyboards!

 

My wife thinks i'm addicted to ebay, :laugh: . I've bought roughly 100 things on there over the last 10 years or so, and have also sold a handful of things.

This is my first time selling on ebay also. It takes some getting used to. My daughter advises me.

I sell my books on amazon.co.uk I have quite a few listed there and I have bought books and dvd's on amazon, both in the UK and the US. I was wondering if you would get more for your dvd's on amazon? Just a thought.

I make more money, generally, selling books on Ebay. There are a lot of folks out there, who I guess, get caught up in the bidding and end up paying more than they should. Some folks need to do a little research before bidding too high. I recently sold "Lost, Season 3" on Ebay which I bought brand new from Amazon.com. I watched the episodes and then auctioned it and made two dollars even after Ebay and PayPal got there fees. I wanted to email the buyer and say, "I'm glad to sell you my Lost DVD's but you are a sucker. At Amazon.com you could have bought them brand new for two dollars less." But, that would be bad for business. So far I have a 100% rating and would like to keep it that way.

 

I've sold and bought on Ebay, GunBroker, Amazon since 1999.

My user id is Mtjim and I'm doing more buying now than selling since my wife has developed an illness that keeps her from doing it. At one time we had a home office set up for Ebay and she was basically doing it full time.

My postmaster told us we were the largest mailer they had at the post office about 7 years ago.

Ebay has changed for the worse over the years. Fees have escalated and regulations have tightened. A lot of sellers are currently boycotting because of the fee structure.

In the late 90's to 2005 it was a seller's market. Since then it has become a buyer's market. If you're careful you can get some real deals.

Largest item I've sold on Ebay was a 1964 Airstream Trailer for $1800.

I used to even buy items on Ebay and sell them on Amazon and vice versa back in the Glory days.

I will be selling quite a bit of stuff this spring as I clean out the garage.

No doubt that eBay has changed for the worse since I started 10 years ago. Now they're messing with the feedback system which wasn't broke to begin with.

Don't do what I did on eBay once! I sold a large boardgame for $2. Fair enough, I thought, but lo and behold, there's an additional charge at the PO and UPS for oversized packages which more than doubled the charge I had put on the auction. (i.e. I had figured the shipping solely on weight, not box size).

Long story short, I ending up paying about $14 to get rid of an old boardgame. Briliant

 

I did the same thing when I first started. I had sold a 6 pack of commemorative Coca Cola bottles and packed them nice and neat. Got to the PO and there was extra charges for glass and liquid. I lost $20+ on that deal.
On another sale I shipped out a 6 pack and forgot to label it as fragile. The PO delivered a package of broken Coke bottles to my buyer. Strange thing is that my buyer did not blame me. It pays to purchase insurance.
On another I was taken by a scam. I sold a bottle for $20 and the buyer used PayPal for the credit card transaction. As a faithful seller I try to get my buyers package out as soon as the transaction is completed. This time I got it out in less than a day. Four days later I got a notice that PayPal was withdrawing the total sum from that deal out of my bank account. The reason was that buyer had used a stolen Visa card. I was taken for the money and my bottle.

I can't believe I just read a five page thread relating to ebay! Must be a very slow Saturday afternoon.

I buy a lot on ebay, stamps, z gauge train cars, Bible software, security camera stuff, computer stuff, pocket pc stuff and stuff :laugh: Have picked up a lot of really good stuff.

Have not had much trouble. I had problems with two people over pocket pcs but both finally settled with me - both obviously lied about condition.

Now I spose I need to start selling so I can get rid of all this stuff :thumbs:

I've been on Ebay (buyer only) for about 10 years. It's been great. Gotten some good deals. :thumbsup:

I recommend you do your research first so you don't overpay. There is some risk buying from Ebay, and my rule of thumb is I want at least 15% off retail prices (after factoring in shipping) to take on that risk; else I just go to my local store and buy it.

Sniping - Yes, I do it. It's legal. Some say it isn't fair. Why not? The Ebay marketplace is a worldly place so you need to take some precautions. Some buyers are simply shill bidders for the purpose of artificially bidding up the auction price. I wait and submit my maximum bid at approximately 15 secs before the end of an auction. That counters the shills efforts since the auction closes seconds after my bid is recorded leaving them with no time to react. Also, prevents me from emotionally bidding higher than I really want to.

For books, I often use Amazon and Half.com. Buying used and you can save a lot of money. Sometimes the shipping cost (3.99) costs more than the book itself. Tip: If you read a lot, order your next book about the time you start your current book. Media mail (low priority snail mail) can take 4-15+ days to arrive.

I buy a lot of books on Amazon.com too plus a lot of other stuff. I'm a member of Amazon Prime which cost $75.00. All my shipping is free and is 2nd day. Overnight is $3.99. In a lot of case for a dollar or two more I get the book new and it arrives in two days. Then I can resell them on EBay and get a good bit of my initial investment back.

I have only sold on ebay. I am selling books and cd's on amazon. The books aren't selling too quickly this time tho'.

i've got 40 items listed right now... CDs, VHS and DVDs. we're doing pretty well, and learning alot about supply and demand.

Yes Joshua, I know what you mean. I had an item listed on ebay and it have quite a lot of views but it didn't sell. I put some more items on yesterday. I have got quite a few books on amazon at the moment.

I have found amazon very useful for buying books for my studies. If we move house then I don't want to be taking all this clutter with us, so ebay and amazon are proving most useful.

I am concerned with the massive changes that eBay has issued since the first of this year. I am more than a bit upset with the way they have treated the digital download sellers this past week.

They are in the process of forcing the UK sellers to use paypal and pay a premium to be visible on the .com site.

I don't know if I will continue to sell on eBay. I've done very well there, but with them raising fvf and store fvf to 12% and the feedback changes coming in May . . .
