19 holding faith and a good conscience; which some having thrust from them made shipwreck concerning the faith:
20 of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I delivered unto Satan, that they might be taught not to blaspheme. 1 Tim 1

I would presume if the intent is for these two 'to be taught', there would be the possibility of recovery as was the case of the one in 1 Cor 5:5 who was also turned over to Satan. He was later reinstated back into the Church. Hymenaeus and Alexander blasphemed. I couldn't tell you what that entailed, maybe someone else can..

Consider this from the next chapter:

but she shall be saved through her child-bearing, if they continue in faith and love and sanctification with sobriety. 1 Tim 2:15

And also these:

......to present you holy and without blemish and unreproveable before him: if so be that ye continue in the faith, grounded and stedfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel which ye heard, Col 1:22,23

Behold then the goodness and severity of God: toward them that fell, severity; but toward thee, God`s goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. Ro 11:22

Now I make known unto you brethren, the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye received, wherein also ye stand, by which also ye are saved, if ye hold fast the word which I preached unto you, except ye believed in vain. 1 Cor 15:1,2

but Christ as a son, over his house; whose house are we, if we hold fast our boldness and the glorying of our hope firm unto the end...... for we are become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm unto the end: Heb 3:6,14

KyRED,
Has this correct.Paul is using these men to illustrate what not to do.He is defining the path or realm of the obediance of faith.....the guardrails....
These men are offered as an example of what not to do in any case! They have gone outside the once for all time delivered faith.
To make shipwreck here is either heading in the direction of apostasy, or at best the sin unto death. Extremes are to be avoided and apostolic instruction is to be strictly adhered to.
4Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

5They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

6We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Theological novelties are to be avoided.

Real christians look to serve the Lord, and do kingdom work, full of kingdom living. These men were going outside that set forth by apostolic teaching.

Osas is a watered down version of the biblical teaching that true saints will perservere in holiness and good works which are ordained for us....God working in us to will and to do of His good pleasure.
Because God has predestined us to be conformed to the Image of his Son.....sanctification has to go on bearing fruit unto holiness of life.
Any teaching that says otherwise is not of God. If there is not a pattern of fruit of the Spirit that is somewhat evident...that person needs to examine themselves ..if they are in the faith.

Most of the epistles lay out clearly what are conduct is to look like...eph 4-5 phil 2,3,4, titus 1,2,1 pet 3,4, col2,3....anything less is not God's salvation

45A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

46And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 47Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:

48He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

49But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
