Any one see anything wrong here?

Our former President of the U. S. of A. is surely one saved, and a good man as far as men go, but is this our prayer and message today?

The time of the Rapture is speeding toward us. I saw in the Baptist Standard (Baptist General Convention) August 8th, 2005 edition reporting on the Baptist World Alliance gathering in Birmingham, England the following:

Article reported by Greg Warner of the Associated Baptist Press, in conversation with former U. S. President Jimmie Carter. Excerpts, verbatim as given by Mr. Greg Warner of words spoken by ex-President Carter.

“The common cause of stopping terrorism provides people of faith a platform for unprecedented cooperation, he said. But finding that one voice is hampered by misunderstandings, he added. One thing we lack, in this time, is an understanding of each other when we worship in different ways.”

“I think the main impediment is not knowing each other, not understanding each other, not recognizing that basic truth…that every religion emphasizes truth and justice and benevolence and compassion and generosity and love. We are just divided now because of the tiny number of terrorist among us.”

In 1976 Jimmy said that anyone (including Jews) who did not believe in Jesus were going to hell. He took a lot of flack for it.

Was 1976 his true faith speaking, or 2005??

It seems just so many seem to preach (Billy Graham & others), and some seem to teach (Jimmy Carter & others) salvation by the grace of God through the faith of His Son, and then either in confusion or mixing leave doubt. A paradox to be sure, but I am not ready to judge, but do observe and question the depth of their knowledge of His Word.

Good question Dr. Bob. Most of us can only size up those of stature, distanced from us by necessity and circumstance, of what we read and hear of them. Then we should do what you do, endeavoring to find if the pattern is consistent.

I believe in many cases some do not realize what they are presenting for consideration. I do trust he believed that faith he held in 1976, and was oblivious to his wording, even though I suspect surely he had pulled his thoughts together before presenting them. Though we know oft times as we speak we may change, or embellish on the fly, which is always a gamble. However he does lean toward man having a hand in bringing peace to this world. I see nothing wrong with Carter's words. People of faith do share a lot in common and can use a common fight against terrorism as an opening to more dialogue.

He did not say anything about universalism.

As a volunteer in Habitat for Humanity, working along side Christians of varying denominations, Mormons, Jews, Muslims, Catholics, and more, I agree with God Dragon. Nothing universalist about it.

I agree, and do not believe he meant to advocate universalism, and I made no reference to this belief. It is simply he believes in Christ he can pull together and make the impossible happen. Even Paul had a problem in thinking he could do what God knew would not be done. God told him in the beginning that those in power in Jerusalem would not hear him. Acts 22:17-21, ”And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance; 18. And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me. 19. And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee: 20. And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him. 21. And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.” It was not God’s plan for Paul to be Preaching and Reasoning with those in Jerusalem. That was to be left up to Jesus’ Apostles, James, and the rest, and those with that gospel that was not for the Gentile.

I believe Jimmy Carter probably understands the Bible in the same sense that Lyndon Johnson did, by believing what is in Isaiah 1:8, ”Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord………..”[/I ]But President Johnson, and I don’t believe President Carter understands that this Reasoning is to be In-House, or with those of like faith.
