Maybe NiteShift understood a false dichotomy, but apparently you don't. A DI-chotomy, by definition, is a division into TWO, not three, options.

As for it being a "$20 word", sorry, it's just the way I speak. I had no other words that were as precise and concise.

Besides, never use a small word when a diminuitive one will do! :tongue3:

For clarification, here is more from Wikipedia, along with more $20 words for NiteShift:

Notice, there is a three-choice version of false dilemma, known as a trifurcation, however that is a subtle difference in strictly false dichotomy and a false dilemma, since a dilemma can have any number of mistaken arguments. A false dichotomy is strictly also a false bifurcation.

If you are going to use the UT logo, please use good logic.

We have two (2) options in my OP. Both of these options are accepted - therefore my OP is not a fallacy of only one option.

3 or more is the only option if my OP is a false dichotomy. You are unable to come up with an 'exception', so I continue to consider my OP a valid argument.

    :BangHead:

And if the best that you can do for our men and women that are dying on the field of combat is bad logic . . . at least appeal to noble emotions . . .

How many Liberals does it take to win a war?

How many of you Liberals does it take to win a war?
Well how the hell can we tell? You won’t fight one anymore.
You say that you support the troops, but the truth’s plain as your face,
You’d pull us from the battle, march us home in full disgrace.
    You’ve no stomach for the fighting, got no mettle, got no pluck;
If you ran this war on terror, we’d be a very well plucked duck.
The wolves of Jihad smell your dread, can smell your craven breath,
And emboldened by the fear they scent, lust for our bloody death.

    SNIP

So how many of you Liberals does it take to win a war?
Or is there simply nothing you believe worth fighting for?
How is it that you’ve never learned, like most when they grow older,
That appeasing badness is a bad idea, only makes the bad guys bolder.
Has your fear of spilling human blood made you Jihad’s useful fools,
Ignoring that their wolf packs never fight within the rules?
    By your demand we stay our hand, you weaken and you bind us;
Forcing us to fight off wolf attacks with that hand tied behind us.

So we bend some rules, in war you fools; so what? Show some respect,
When it’s your fuzzy-headed “feelings” “thinking” men fight to protect.

I re-read this post and . . . yuck! If you do not know what you are talking about - stay quiet and don't make Texas look bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yuck!

    Yuck!

A dilemma is two lemmas, hence 'di' for two.

A lemma is a known (or assumed) fact. A lemma is used in logic and is one 'premise' of an argument.

A dilemma, by DEFINITION has two and only two, premises to build a SINGLE argument. A dilemma is a form of argument with two lemmas and one conclusion.

A false dilemma is a claimed argument that has a different set than 2 and only 2 lemmas . . .

Truth is often a 'false dilemma'. Jesus is Son, Savior, and the Truth and the Life - would be a logical 'false dilemma' . . . but, that is TRUTH!

EG, once again, you are showing such lack of understanding of the facts that you embarass yourself. Pity.

As for making Texas "look bad", too late. Electing W as governor has already accomplished that! ;)

MP, if only you had spent the money on that high priced university . . .

Even UT gives a good education. You should have learned the basics of formal and informal logic . . . .

I guess that I am asking too much.

    Oh well,

Back to the OP . . . appeasement or war . . . is there another option? If there is not, which will work better? Appeasement of the terrorists? Or fighting them? Fighting them there or here?

We should have been fighting them where they were. Unfortunately, Bush chose to fight them where they weren't. And not surprisingly, where they were, in Afghanistan, they are now coming back, because we are busy fighting them in Iraq, where they weren't.

I know, Rumsfeld said "but all the good targets are in Iraq."

Still, there's something to be said for attacking the enemy instead of the most convenient targets.

I guess Rummy can at least take some comfort in the fact that since we invaded, there are now terrorists in Iraq.

EG, your slander and ad hominems only detract from whatever God-knows-what point you are trying to make.

Ok - so you got your poles crossed again . . . and you think I am at fault.

You do not know the words are that you are using . . . you are cut and pasting from an on-line source.

    Grow up.

    Get over it.

Or study the English language and a little Logic or Rhetoric.

EG, your ad hominems continue, so I guess you have no point to make. The wikipedia excerpts are to support a point, and were small parts of a large article, which is standard practice. I have also explained in my own words. So quit trolling, stop the ad hominems and stick to the issues. As for using English and logic, heed your own advice. And for rhetoric, you are full of that!

You are certainly free to disagree with me, but do yourself a favor and stick to facts and not personalities.

NiteShift, not trying to do that! However, you and EG need to get over your fascination of me and get this thread back on topic.

Help, I was laughing so hard I fell down and can't get up!

After misapplying words to obscure the topic, words that he does not know how to use, did MP really say we should get on topic?

I agree . . . the OP is, was, and will continue to be - SIMPLE.

We have two options that I see . . .

Gentlemen, please stick to the topic and refrain from personal attacks. Personal attacks only prove to the rest of us that you are losing your side of the debate.....

Can we appease the terrorists and it work?

    Is warfare the solution?

Personally, I do not see a third alternative . . . and one has not been proposed . . .

But, is warfare a better solution than appeasement?

What appeasers fail to realize is that, with this opponent, they will smile and knod at your peace offerings while they stab you in the heart and cut off your head with a dull knife.

    Allah akbar!
