The amount of Arctic sea ice has plummeted in recent decades bold manifestation of the rise in temperature resulting from the rapid increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. After staying below 300 parts per million (ppm) for some 800,000 years, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere skyrocketed as humans started burning more and more fossil fuels. In 2013, atmospheric CO2 averaged 396 ppm. Carbon dioxide traps heat, reducing the amount escaping into space, thereby warming the globe. Together with other heat-trapping gases, the additional CO2 has so far raised the Earth temperature by 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century. The extra heat is melting snow and ice around the world, including Arctic sea ice, changing the face of the planet as we know it.

Looks to me like 2013-2014 is about the same as 2011-2012; and well within the standard deviation for the period since 1981. The overall summary of the website is that Arctic ice is below normal, while Antarctic ice is above average.

I did hear a feller on the TV say that the reason it was so cold is because it is getting so warm.

I try to watch my intake of stupid stuff like those folk who got their boat stuck in the ice that they went to prove wasn't there.

As I said in another post, local weather does not mean the whole world, else those living in Prague would say global warming is speeding up. They are having a very warm winter, so far, and some spring flowers are in bloom.

Local conditions? It snowed in South Texas. Here's some news from a little further south:

Back in the 1970s we were told to watch for the coming ice age. Now the same folk are beating their drum about polar ice melting. They also happen to be the same folk who tell us most of the world was under ice a few million years ago. Doesn't that mean the ice has been retreating for a few million years?

I heard there was this giant big fire ball in the sky that continues to burn day and night ever since the beginning of time. It is said to warm the Earth when it rotates to face the fire ball and it fluctuates in what is called solar flares. I think we need to try and send a space ship out and squirt some water on it to cool our planet. If we all can just get Owl Gore on board, he will spin it in our favor to get enough funds for the project. What say you?

Be sure to go at night when it is not so hot. Another Maunder Minimum with the River Thames freezing in London would not persuade the people believing in global warming. They are now saying that dramatic changes are proof of global warming. The sleeping sun might be connected to these polar vortexes. I am wondering if California had drought in 1978 during the blizzard that hit that year in the Midwest?

So, you are one of those who say, "Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up."

If you take measurements and make a chart, how is that not meaningful. For instance, if you plot the money you spend and it is going up, doesn't that mean you are spending more. Or by your logic the chart lies. :laugh: and you say "some knucklehead just made up a chart".

Wheat comes from the ground that is fertilized by cow poop. Cows poop because we feed them corn that was intended to make ethanol. When cows poop they pass gas. Methane kills the ozone layer and voila! global warming.

Know where all that CO2 comes from? Farmers running tractors spreading manure. Spreading manure returns nutrients to the ground but it also causes runoff when it rains. Cow poop runoff in Iowa causes algae blooms in Japan. I read that on the Internet, too but Rev didn't write it. Algae blooms kill fish. When fish populations are down folks eat more beef. Vicious cycle ain't it!
