[7] Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

Thank you for standing up. It is sad, but many Baptist Churches are becoming (how should I say it?) "infested" with doctrines we never accepted.

Although they will argue and say these are "old" Baptist doctrines, what is really happening is the Pentecostal and non-denominational movement (Pentecostal that doesn't want to be identified as pentecostal) are now infiltrating other denominations especially Baptist.

The sad part is that much of it is the fault of the church where it occurs. The church has not grounded its members in Baptist doctrine, using the Bible as the guide.

Sadly, these churches are vulnerable for anybody to come in with a heretical doctrine, whether it be the one discussed or any other doctrine.

Churches "tolerant" to doctrines are obviously going to have problems in the long run.

My church is SBC and this doctrine would NEVER be tolerated. You know why? It is NOT Baptist doctrine and it is also a twist and misinterpretation of the Bible.

You can just bet that if someone accepts this doctrine they will either accept the other pentecostal doctrines in the future or they already do. Such as: Lack of eternal security and Baptist of the Holy Spirit at a time other than salvation. Just ask them.

By the way, I totally agree with Dr. Bob. I thought the popularity contest was out of line.

"Feel sorry for me because I don't believe like you so I want to see how many of you are tolerant of my false beliefs."

If it walks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck.....again, need I say more.

In about eight years, you won't be able to tell the difference between a Pentecostal and Southern Baptist.

    Fat Eagle,

I am not a Pentecostal, but I don't believe that the Holy Spirit is taking a vacation. From my point of view, the more Bapticostals, the better!

Now set these verses into context and exegete their implications! </font>[/QUOTE]These come right after verse 6 where Jesus said:

[6] Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

    Hey Fat_Eagle,

I left the COG for many reasons. Mainly for the doctrine. The church I attended was not a traditional Church of God. It was more baptist in nature. When I became licensed I visited and preach at quite a few. I knew they were charismatic but I saw things that were unacceptable. (i.e. convulsions, interrupting the preacher to prophesy, etc) I found it extrabiblical and could not accept it.

The doctrines I disagreed with were:

    loss of Salvation
    Entire sanctification (by attainment)
    The ordained ministry of women
Baptism of the Holy Spirit evidenced by tongues alone. (they believe that a requirement for ordination is tongues)

I must say that their belief in the loss of salvation is different then others. As it is preached within the denomination so regularly once you "fall" (by that they mean lose "holiness" you lose salvation) I believe that holiness is a requirement but that it is the holiness of Jesus Christ and not ourselves. We should strive to live Christ-centered lives but that does not mean we earn sainthood or anything. Eph 2:8-9 'For by grace are ye saved through faith and not of yourselves, it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast'.

It is wierd though,. Did you know the COG was founded by a Baptist minister??? Anyway, I understand they are my brothers and sisters in Christ. I don't believe they are heretics or anything. They don't have to agree with me.

    In Christ,

Been wondering for a few weeks if BaptistBoard will end up in the same boat.

I'll be long gone before that happens.

Ralph: I can guarantee you that if u went to a Pentacostal church or board like this one you would be welcome.
As for tongues in script. Yes indeed I could speak in my tongues in script because once we receive the language God gives us it is permanent and we can use it like English. I will not put a show on with it though here because that is not the reason for the Gift of tongues.
All the deciples spoke in tongues and if they did and encouraged others to do so then it is for all Christians, as we cannot parcel out Scripture as for today and others not for today as that is adding or taking away from Gods Word and that is forbidden. Of course God is not going to force you receive his blessings for that has to received by faith just as salvation was.

Great idea Lady Eagle! I will pray at once for the brethren here to be blessed and for God to open some hearts and spirit to receive all that he has for them and most importantly to be filled with his precious Holy Spirit.

Amen to that Craig by the sea!!!!!!!!

Untangled: was that the Church of God ( Cleveland Tenn) or the one in Anderson Indiana?

I agree there is much I could not accept with the COG folks, but I had some great fellowship with them and there are some wonderful brethren in the churches.

The Assemblies of God are closer to my beliefs in the Pentacostal mode and they are relaxed, laid back and more like Baptist in worship.

The important thing is they preach Jesus crucified and salvation thru faith by Grace.
All the other doctrine in churches is secondary and has nothing to do with being saved.

But after salvation comes sanctification, so why do so many think no one should ever grow after being saved? especially in Bible doctrine, as opposed to FALSE doctrine, and besides, the same Word that is able to save is also profitable for DOCTRINE, so don't minimze it.

Specifically, what language do you speak with your gift, and who else speaks this same language?

What I'm trying to find out is WHY specifically do you feel the need to speak in an unknown tongue. I for one, would certainly love to see an example of this language. Would you consider PMing some script? I will keep it confidential and not post it to the web.

He's probably not going to do that, Phillip. When a person has a true spiritual gift, they don't take it lightly or misuse it to satisfy curiosity of others. [IMG]

Uh... if this doesn't prove you are NOT Baptist nothing does! We ARE filled with HIS precious Holy Spirit at the moment of our receiving Christ as Lord and Savior.

Also, here again is the gift of tongues being raised to some GREAT importance when scripture outright says it's one of the lesser gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

Guaranteed not. You have not yet begun to feel my ire than to start with the boatload of pentecostal false doctrine like the pseudo/sham tongues going on today.

Remember, I do not believe that one can be a Baptist and believe in tongues for today by defintion of the Baptist distinctives. If we get folks promoting the tongues heresy, I will work to shut them down.

Serious as a heart attack. You have NO WORRY that the BB might ever go "pentecostal". I am SORRY that such a thought would even cross someone's mind, and apologize that we haven't been more dilligent in condemning such.

This would appear to be the ideal, but Baptists have for generations engaged themselves in discussion as to why this is not always the case with all Baptists and other Christians. In the New Testament we find four clearly distinct aspects of salvation:

    1. Justification (Rom. 3:24, 28; 4:2, 25; 5:1, 8 - 10, 16, 18; 1 Cor. 6:11; Gal. 3:24; Tit. 3:7; James 2:24)

    2. Receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5, 8 16; 2:4, 17, 18, 33, 38; 4:8, 31; 5:32; 6:3, 5; 8:15 – 19; 9:17; 10:44 – 47; 11;15 – 16; 13:52; 15:8; 19:2, 6)

    3. Sanctification (Acts 20:32; 1 Cor. 1:30; 6:11;1 Thes. 4:3 – 4; 2 Thes. 2:13 – 14; 1 Pet. 1:2)

    4. Glorification (Rom. 8:17, 30; 2 Thes. 2:14 )

Many Baptists include a 5th aspect, being filled with/being baptized with the Holy Spirit, and some Baptists distinguish between being filled with the Holy Spirit and being baptized into the Holy Spirit, arguing that there is one Baptism into the Holy Spirit, but many fillings with the Holy Spirit. The issue is further confused because some Baptists believe that the Baptism into the Holy Spirit follows sanctification, and other Baptists believe that the Baptism into the Holy Spirit is a precursor to sanctification.

When we look at salvation experiences in the Book of Acts and the manner in which they are described, we do not find a consistency suggesting to some Baptist theologians that there is no set pattern and that God works in the lives of different Baptists differently just as he does in the lives of other Christians.

When we look at salvation and sanctification experiences in Baptist history, we find very similar inconsistencies suggesting that what was true in the book of Acts has been true throughout Baptist history.

One might ask why we find such divergent opinions among Baptists. The answer is simply that not all Baptists have experienced the aspects of salvation the same way, and as they have sought in the Scriptures a deeper understanding of their experiences, they have interpreted the Bible differently than others whose experience has been different.

“But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Thes. 2:13 – 14, KJV)

    Fat Eagle,

    COG Clevland, TN.

You said the AOG are closer to your beliefs in pentacostal mode? Wow. The AOG congregations in my area are out of control. Running, falling out, screaming (not shouting), literally jumping over pews, etc. I know a lady that went to one and someone stood up and "prophesied" that she was a tramp. Wow. Jesus calls women tramps. Well, the lady was having an affair, but everyone in the church knew because she was a deacon's wife. The whole community knows who she is.

Another example of people claiming to prophecy:

I was told by a minister that I was going to be famous, marry a specific girl which he named and a few other things. People get caught up with "Magic" type powers. I believe many pentacostals misunderstand the role of "prophet" to begin with. There's no need to discuss if the spiritual gifts are still active if you don't understand what the gift actually is. You understand what I'm saying? Haven't you experienced this in the AOG or COG?

    In Christ,

    Brooks
