I ask because it came up on another thread

All my life I have been over weight, in my teens I was normally a size 16-18 down to a 12 for a while (another’s size 6 or 8) and then in my mid 20’s I became heavier. Vanity prevents me from saying:smilewinkgrin:

My family jokes the most, I tell them I do not like them and there response is that they are only picking and I need to grow thicker skin (PUN ???)

I tell them as a defense mechanism and I laugh when other people tell them, but not when my family does because they should know better

Is it a contradiction to find them inappropriate but yet you still laugh?

What are your opinions?

I tried to vote in the poll, and messed up somehow. But I think fat jokes are never funny. I have been overweight all of my adult life and still am somewhat, but especially now that I have lost a significant amount of weight, and I see how differently people treat me now that I am smaller, it makes me sick. Fat jokes are never funny and told by family members makes them worse.

Nobody has the right to tell you that you should change how you feel in order to accomodate their bad behavior.

I joke around about myself with certain people or in certain situations. I've joked with best friends, mutual teasing. That was fine.

Even if the weight is because of gluttony rather than an illness, it's not someone else's place to mock it. I had someone do that to me once, and I returned the favor by laughing because I knew he'd cheated on his wife. Boy, he didn't think THAT was funny! (in fact, I thought I was gonna get slapped) But he got the point and we both apologized and moved on.

(Hey, GIIIIINNNA, I saw you as you were posting this  )
My inlaws are always making comments about mine and my husbands weight. (and they have no room) I think its one ting, for example, when we gals in my exercise class make certain comments as we are excersizing. We are all fluffy, lol. But its another matter entirely when one knows the "fat" comments or jokes are intended to jab.

My votes not there -- Cause I'd vote no to all the above. (I think I would, now that I can't see the choices anymore, I'm gonna second guess myself!)

I came into this world fat and bald, and I'm going out the same way.

I don't care what someone makes fun of me about, as long as it's funny.

"Oh, but you're not as fat as (blank)!" Well, maybe not, so I won't laugh as hard when you make a joke about me.

the only time i find it appropriate, funny or i laugh at fat jokes... is if an overweight person is telling it - and then laughs along after the fact.

Since I'm on the heavy side, I once did have a sensivity to 'fat jokes' but, like many other topics, my sensitivities have become basically null. I do laugh at some fat jokes, though I seldom make them. A woman in my church, who is on the fat side, was talking about a committe she was on, which initials were F.A.T.-- I can't remember what the letters stand for, but I remember her joking about the little acronym.

If you ever watched The Honeymooners, it's hard to not laugh at all the fat jokes conerning Jackie Gleason. But one of the best ones I ever heard was on an old repeat of Hollywood Squares. The question was asked: "Jackie Gleason claims not only to believe in these things, but to have actually seen them on at least 2 occasions. What are they?" The celebrity panelist gave the bluff answer, "His feet."

BTW in the poll, the options are themselves questions, not answers.

A friend of mine who is dyslexic has a bumper sticker that says, "DAM: Mothers Against Dyslexia". I think you can have a sense of humor or be sensitive about anything.

I am fat. Always have been. I lost 55 pounds my senior year in high school and graduated at 235. i have never seen that since... or anything even in the neighborhood.

I sometimes tell fat jokes. And I laugh at fat jokes. When someone makes me the target of a fat joke, they get to find out what it's like to be on the wrong end of my witt... I can be extremely funny, but I can be extremely hurtful if I try.

I used to make fun of myself... well, I still do, but in a joking manner. i don't put myself down anymore. I may be fat, but I can outwork most skinny people.

Inappropriate Jokes?

Some years ago, I had a supervisor (in the USAF) who collected Pollock jokes. Of course, this was NOT liked by the "powers that be", but nobody would correct this wonderful man. The reason? His name was Braunislaus Blaszkowski!

What I learned from him is that you NEED to be able to laugh at yourself. Therefore, I do not TRY to offend someone, but at the same time I DO laugh at "fat" jokes.

My preference, however, is Baptist jokes.

Has anyone heard the one about how many Baptists it takes to change a lightbulb? (I heard it here, on the BB).

Bill

I wasn't sure how to vote, all the answers look like questions, I was confused.
Fat jokes are never funny, and I find it incrediable that there are actually adults who do not know you don't make fun of people. I was taught this as a child, weren't they.
Everyone needs to be able to laugh at themselves, no matter if they are fat or not. But I would not tell fat jokes about me or anyone.

As probably the most qualified person on the BB (close to 350lb), my professional opinion on each question is YES! :D :D :D

Jokes about aft people are never appropriate, or okay! When you make un of smeione who is fat, you are also making fun of another overweight person who has been kind to you.

Gotcha beat, Pete! 365, or I was on 6/14. I weigh in tomorrow, and hopefully have dropped some more.

Started out at 400, and have dropped 35 so far. WooHoo!
