Are the Tsarnaev brothers white?

In the wake of David Sirota’s hot-button essay last week, “Let’s Hope the Boston Marathon Bomber Is a White American,” conservatives swarmed to trash Sirota and Salon. I’m not here to defend or criticize Sirota’s piece – I get in enough trouble on these issues myself — but the storm it provoked was revealing, especially once we learned the identity of the two suspects: Tamarlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, ethnic Chechens who grew up in Russia and came legally to the U.S., who were also Muslim.

Hate mail and punditry targeting Salon and Sirota declared that Sirota was not only morally wrong in hoping the terrorists would turn out to be white — but that he was proven spectacularly incorrect, because the Tsarnaev brothers are not white. “Sorry David Sirota, looks like Boston Bombing suspects are not ‘white Americans,’” wrote the folks at Newsbusters. “Is David Sirota crying uncontrollably because the Boston bombers weren’t whites??” one conservative emailed Salon. There was a lot of other email in the same tedious vein.

But are we sure the Tsarnaevs aren’t white? They are quite literally Caucasian, as in from the Caucuses: Rebecca Eisenberg helps with this handy map. And ethnically in this country, we count Americans of Russian descent, as well as Chechens, as white. Dzhokhar was a naturalized American citizen; Tamarlan had applied for citizenship but reportedly didn’t get it because of FBI concerns about his possible ties to Islamic radicals.

So why are the Tsarnaev brothers not white, at least to right-wingers? Is it only because they’re Muslim? Muslim immigrants? Or is it because they’re “bad,” and whiteness must be surrendered when white people are bad?

Nope, they are Dagistani\Chechen. Dagistan is north of Chechnya which is north of Armenia and Azerbaijan. While a Muslim territory, the area is no where close to the Middle East. IOW, they aren't Arabs or Turks.

I suggest you take a look at the history of the area. Islam came via the Ottoman Turkish conquest. But, then most of that part of the world isn't part of Western European civilization even the Orthodox Christian.

They are Caucasian but they do not think like Europeans because they are militant Islamic so their culture is Arabic Moslem.

Paul - seriously? Did you not give this some critical thought? The Salon article wanted the perpetrators to be white Americans because of the "additional tarnish to islam" if it turned out they were muslim. Well, it turned out they were muslim. So now they're going to try to spin it as "yeah, but they're white"???

What does the amount of melanin in one's skin have to do with one's religion? The gene pool since Shem, Ham and Japheth has been mixed by victorious armies, explorers, followers of Allah, etal. There is no such thing as a pure race, regardless of all the bigotry overt and covert.

I don't care. If they did it, prove it (I think they did) then make them disappear, at least the 1 that is left. Do not give him a pass, send his bum to gitmo and let him rot as a terrorist.
Whether the guy(s) behind it were white purple or polka dotted people are dead and maimed. The perpetrators color is irrelevant. As is their religion and reasons for the bombing.

Agreed that the area is not part of Western civilization--I keep hoping that the Russians will come to their senses and rejoin European culture totally. As for Islam, I think that it should be contained as communism was and that we should withdraw economically from Islamic nations. I was merely trying to say that the bombers are white, Caucasians, but stuck in an Arabic religion, a temple of doom. There are no human rights except in Christianity.

Russian culture is based on Byzantine influences, along with periodic later conquests by the Mongols and Tartars. So, at its core. its never been a part of Western European culture., The rest I agree with you on.
