Consider this.
Christ says in Matt 11:12, "And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. This the literal sometimes violent persecution of a gathered people beginning with the Jews resistance of John the Baptist and his work to prepare a people, nation and therefore a kingdom, for the Lord. (Luke 1:17)
Just as David prepared the material for Solomon to build the temple so John gathered the people together that the Lord might build and rule over them through the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I Peter 2:5 says, "Ye also as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house (temple) an holy priesthood, able to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God thru Christ Jesus." With the temple being built the nation has a place to worship the Father when gathered together as a body of Christ.
1 Peter 2:9 says, "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy NATION, a peculiar PEOPLE (then a kingdom)...This is why an individual cannot be a church or a nation. This is the significance of the gathering TOGETHER of God's people to edify the body of Christ, a nation not built by the hands of men or their vain imaginations.
We, as Baptists, are not recognized by the UN as a nation as are the catholics. Yet the body of Christ is not without authority to rule and reign as the sons of Abraham. (Gen 18:19) Luke 9:1 says "Then he called his twelve disciples TOGETHER, and gave them power and authority..."
We may lack civil authority to a degree as we cannot imprison the rebellious by physical confinment but the authority given to the body of Christ as a church is a real now as it was during the time of Christ. Matthew 18:15-18 show that authority in the body of Christ and its effect upon a rebellious member. Verse 18 says, "Verily I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." This shows the recognition of the authority of the sons of Abraham, as a nation, people, kingdom, and generation, to do justice and judgment. (Gen 18:19) This authority cannot be exercised by an individual as individual cannot be a church or nation/kingdom so the individual, apart from the body of Christ, therefore cannot do the work/will of the Father as to building up (edifying) of the body of Christ. The duty to exclude a rebellious member causing division and dissention is a literal act perform by a literal local visible body of Christ exercising its authority as a nation. This is done by the guidance of the Holy Spirit on the body of Christ that has the heart of Christ present in it. We cannot, and must not spiritualize away the kingdom of God as it exists today.
This same authority is seen in the millennial reign of Christ. The rebellious (violent Matt 11:12) are still present and are described in Zec 14:16-19 and must be ruled by Christ and his people by a rod of iron.
