Are You a Pulpit Thumper ?

Roger, what is Open Day? Is it similar to a Grand Opening celebration?

 

Sort of, we had been meeting in our home for several years and had moved into a hired hall. After a couple of weeks we had an "open house" to invite friends and neighbours to church.

 

Make it plain Preacher, "repeat ofter me, SALVATION IS NOT OF WORKS".

Good job Brother, I haven't kept up with your blogs lately. When I left off you were still in Is.

Why remember Patrick? Did the young man go to be with the Lord?

I actually voted against a pastor one time because of his phony antics..

Here's the story..
This guy was trying out for pastor. I really liked him.. He wasn't loud, or anything, but he was passionate about what he believed. He was a crier. And I had all intentions in the world to vote for him... until...

A deacon took him to the side, and told him that he would be following a shouting pastor, and if he wanted to be voted in he would have to turn up the volume...

The next time he preached, he was jumping all over the place, shouting, spitting... It was just not the same guy...

That told me something. If he was that willing to change his style to get the pastorate, he would waver on other things. So he lost my vote.

And he wasn't voted in either, I guess other saw through his phoniness...

Moral of the story... be the way you are, and you will go far.

My husband isnt a pulpit thumper either, but he does walk around on the platform and he always preaches from a text, not a prooftext. I usually come away having learned something and/or seen the passage in a new or fresh way in its allpication to daily life.

I know there are people in our church who actually like to be fussed/yelled at. I am all for boldly proclaiming the truth, but that can be done without a show.

Nah... just move from one side to the other, I do raise my voice though sometimes, and sometimes I have been known to cry...

It is hard for me to make it through the crucifixtion story without Crying.
Just understanding what Christ went through for me brings tears to my eyes.

I am more of a teacher/preacher.

Some preacher's natural style is going to be a world away from our own but it may well suit their own enviroment and culture.

Personally, I feel I am still developing and my "style" is not set in stone. I am trying apply certain skills and good practices as far as presentation is concerned.

I have never cried in the pulpit... and I believe it is a weakness in me. But, tears do not flow with me at all. About the only time in my 25 years I remember crying because of emotion was when my grandmother died with no testimony of salvation and at the birth of my daughter. The first were tears of sadness, the others tears of joy, I totally lost it.

But, one of the men in my church will sometimes preach and with him the tears just flow! Even at his wedding reception speech, he cried. Naturally his preaching style follows his natural temperament.

In my church the people would be intrigued but possibly untouched by the shouting, stomping preaching style. But in another instance that is what is needed for the culture and society.

I think often it is unhelpful, but there is a line that can be crossed where it becomes not just unhelpful, but a hinderance.

Some of the churches I have preached in were accustomed to shouting, stomping, running, jumping, and stories about "momma" that brought a tear to the preachers eye. In those same churches I stayed relatively still, preached my own way and saw the altar filled. In other places they were accustomed to my normal style of preaching and sometimes the Lord has blessed there also.

It is about being who you are, holding to Scriptural practices and reflecting, to a degree, the congregation you are with. (When I was in the mountains in Georgia I kept my words shorter ect...)

 

I stand behind the pulpit during the whole 40 minute message --- I'm not a thumper, though!!

 

Don't have a pulpit. And I don't think the music stand that I place my notes on could take much of a pounding.
