I watched the trailer. I recognized Brian Krause. He was on the original "Charmed" series.

I think that all Christians are called to help the poor if we can (James 1:27 etc.). My church supports the local food bank and one of our members is the Chairman of it.
I can't speak for the USA, but I am pretty sure that the main cause of poverty in Britain today is marital breakdown, followed by gambling and alcohol. We are hugely better off than our grandparents were in the Depression, but these three things quickly dissipate wealth.
At the food bank, we try to make sure that the clients receive a tract or a New Testament along with their food.

Many, many years ago, my mother-in-law, had heard about a Marine family located on Camp Pendleton, through her Catholic church. The upshot was she enlisted several members of her family and her church family and put together a bunch of Christmas gifts specifically for each of the Marine's kids and wife. I played almost no part in her effort, but did drive my wife on to the base, and to their housing and sat in the car as my wife and kids carried the packages to the front door. They rang the bell, the porch light came on and the wife appeared. They told her this was from her family and friends. She cried.

I was never more taken by the power of love...

I normally drop things off at the Starvation Army who distributes in Christ's name. I think it helps down and outers in a way that doesn't suggest being hustled by a church. Or other ulterior motives.
