His record deserves some examination, as Biden has a history of making racially charged statements. The 1977 quote was actually raised last year but was quietly buried, even though the New York Times had done a rather lengthy piece on Biden’s record on busing and school desegregation last July.
According to a
Business Insider article from last July 15, the quote attributed to Biden was uncovered by a University of Southern California Law School professor, Daria Roithmayr, and was
reported in the Times piece.
The quote was believed to come from a congressional hearing where anti-busing legislation was being addressed, with Biden saying at the time that he wanted to “insure we do have orderly integration of society,” while emphasizing that he was “not just talking about education but all of society.”
Biden continued, saying: “Unless we do something about this, my children are going to grow up in a jungle, the jungle being a racial jungle [emphasis added] with tensions having built so high that it is going to explode at some point. We have got to make some move on this.”
