Baltimore, statues, and history.

So I see headlines from CNN, NYT, NPR, and others, talking about how officials in Baltimore have removed four Confederate statues.

But upon closer inspection, one of the statues was of Roger Taney. Chief Justice Taney was the sitting Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States when he died. A Jacksonian Democrat appointee, I'm sure many people have strong opinions about his years on the bench. But...

Is the state of history education and editorial oversight so bad that the head of one of the three branches of the .gov of the USA gets labeled a Confederate?

Pretty sure Taney will be removed from the Maryland State House. His Dred Scott decison was one of the most unjust decisions in US history.

Sure. But did he issue that decision as a US citizen or a rebel?

Rob, he was the chief justice of the Supreme Court. The decision was issued in 1957. There was no Confederate states at that time. So, to answer your question, he was a US citizen.

????

Taney died in 1864. Dred Scott v. Sandford was ruled in 1857.

I think you are confused. 1864 is after 1857. It was Tanny who wrote the decision and at that time he was a US citizen. Also, he was from Maryland and Maryland did not joint the Confederacy. Taney was still the chief justice of the Supreme Court when he died. Taney administered the oath of office for Lincoln.

That's the point of the thread. Why are media sources (CNN, NYT, NPR, & etc.) reporting the removal of Taney's statue as the removal of a Confederate statue?

Ask them.

My guess is that it is because he was in essence defending slavery and he was a strong states-right supporter.

Today they are taking down statues, the next thing is they will start burning books they don't like. Let's see, where is the parallel? That's right Wilber, National Socialist Germany in the 1930's.

Chief Justice Taney was a Jacksonian Democrat.

Hopefully the Rapture will occur very soon, and the left can then do as they please with this plot of earth called the USA.
If this happens, I'll wager that the USA will be a 3rd world country in less than 1 year!!
