Baptist Church Names, pet peeve

The ones that crack me up are Friendship, Fellowship, Harmony, etc. You know when you see the name that they got mad and split from another church.

 

Now, that's the church I want to pastor!

 

Let's say we have a town--"Cattle Ranch"

The first baptist church founded will be FBC Cattle Ranch.

The second baptist church doesn't want to be "second baptist," so it names itself after a section within that town (or a street)...hence...FBC Big Red Barn. The third baptist church is in a bind--it can't really call itself "second baptist," but "third baptist" makes little sense without a "second baptist." So they will name "New Hope BC" because of the bad blood between their members and FBC Cattle Ranch stemming from the church split. The new contemporary Baptist church across town gets named "Cattle Ranch Community Church," and hardly anyone knows what denomination they are. FBC Big Red Barn has some members who think their church is going the way of CRCC, so they split off and form "Old-Time-Religion Baptist Church."

Personally, I prefer location/denomination names. E.g. Alexandria Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church-Gunion, etc.

But I'd rather have Fellowship Community Church than something like ....

St. Francis First Pentecostal Baptist Church in God of Prophecy of the Third Day, in revelation, by the Spirit, of our great Reedemer-- Charleston

or,

as a church is named in my town....

"Church"--that's it! Nothing but "Church."

 

We have had quite a few compliments from people around town about the name of our church, "Family Baptist Church." Most people say it just sounds friendly.

 

is there any Cavalry Baptist churches out there? haha.

My church is named East Baptist Church. Not East End, East Side or East Paducah, just East.

It was originally located a few blocks east of the downtown area, in an area known as the--get this--South Side. Twenty years ago we relocated to an interstate interchange, farther south, but we're still East.

 

I do not know why the church I pastor is named New Prospect Baptist Church (no, there is not a Prospect Baptist Church and we did not start as a split). On the second Sunday of this month this church will be 148 years old, and there are on records as to why this name was chosen. I am just happy that they did not name us by the geographical location of the building. Otherwise, I would be pastor of Booger Holler Baptist Church!

 

I always thought a good name for a Church would be:

Tiocfaidh ár lá Baptist Church

The meaning is good, but the political associations could be confusing and dangerous.

One of the SBC churches here in town goes by The Church at Grace Point.

I've belonged to Ridgeview BC, Waterville BC, and Elkmont BC. The first was named because it sits at the base of a ridge, the second is the local community's name, and the last... I don't know. Elkmont is way up in the Smokie Mountains... I guess they just liked the sound of it.

We've got a First BC, North Cleveland BC, East Cleveland BC, and so on.

One of the newer congregations is named after the valley it's in... sort of. It's in Walker Valley, but goes by The Valley Church.

I guess some of the more colorful would be Candies Creek BC, Clingan Ridge BC, Shenandoah BC, Cloverleaf BC (right off of the by-pass), Council BC, Way of the Cross BC, Christway BC, Bethel Baptist Tabernacle, and Eveninglight Gospel Tabernacle.

 

Umm, I don't think I would use that name down here .

I was married at Jump Off Baptist Church. One of my favourite names.

If we moved our church just a few miles to a small village we could be Kill Baptist

 

Well, let me see...I grew up in Faith Baptist Church and I attended a Faith Baptist for a short while in college...Also have attended a Faith Community Church( Baptist but without Baptist in the name),
Calvary (2 different churches)
Bible (2 different churches)


There are several others, but, I'll leave it at that for those things.

Pet peeves?

Baptist "Temple"
Numbering of churches: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th...I've actually seen them go up to 22nd
Also agree with another poster who stated they didn't like "Memorial" in the churches name. Christ is to be whom we remember in our worship.

 

There is a small country church here named, "Bethlehem's Manger." I don't know the denomenation, but the name is interesting.

In New York there is a church called, Graffiti Baptist. As I understand it, that's not the official name, but in an effort to keep graffiti off of the front of the building, they put a big sign on the side of it that asked people to keep the graffiti there. The neighborhood simply started calling them, "Grafitit Baptist."

I have found it interesting that people will nickname a church. Members of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, IL will affectionately call it, "Willow" whereas the clerks and nearby gas stations and hotels will call it, "The Creek."

 

I went to a Baptist church that started at a mall, The Commons Mall. It was called, The Church at the Commons.

Went to a New Teamon Baptist Church. I googled it and saw others with that name. Does anyone know the origin of New/Teamon?

I'm sure I've driven past Dungiven Baptist Church here in Northern Ireland.

 

I sell building materials and travel across the eastern half of NC - I prefer back roads when traveling and read all the church names I pass - some are quite humorous (although probably not by intent). I attend Immanuel Baptist Church (joined several years after marrying my wife who grew up there). I have always liked the name Immanuel as it reflects who we are, or always should be; "God with us". However, I am thankful to all the Grassy Pond Churches, Lizard Lick Churches, etc., for brightening my day when I am out on the road. Bruce
