Pastor Harold Sightler

Pastor Harold Sightler was a great fundamentalist preacher, I remember him from a child preaching at our Church in Wilmington, NC.

He was loved and admired by many.

I agree with everything he said except for OSAS. It's ;not an easy thing to disagree with one that you admire.

But the Scripture is clear on the subject, at least it is to me.

That is the type preaching and teaching I grew up with, all the fundamental preachers were of that spirit and confidence in those days.

Huh. I.do not recall the issue of OSAS being mentioned in this message.

Yea, he does mention it, I listened to it just a couple of hours ago.

He mentioned it as one of the foundational beliefs of the Baptists.
Thank you.

In the video beginning just after 26 minutes 30 seconds about OSAS as a Baptist essential. From my perspective I agree. One cannot know one is saved, if OSAS was not true.

Well, we differ there, but that's ok. There is assurance of salvation without believing OSAS. It's a matter of believing (faith).

1 John 5:13

"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."

I am not understanding how we disagree.

1 John 5:9-13.
1 John 5:1, ". . . Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: .

I don't believe in OSAS and I know I'm saved.

The requirement for salvation is faith in the finished work of Christ.

No where will you find in Scripture that one must believe OSAS to have assurance of salvation.

The requirement is as John said, faith.

Yeah. I hadn't understood that.

Two questions:

How do you know you will be a believer when your life comes to an end?

Did Jesus lie about never perishing? John 10:28, . . . I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, . .

Yeah.

Two questions:

Did Jesus lie about never perishing? John 10:28, . . . I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, . .

Hebrews 3:12

"Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God."

Here we see that the brethren can depart from God. The reason -- unbelief.

Hebrews 3:14

"For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;"

Here we see that we are made partakers of Christ if we hold our faith to the end (to our physical death).

So to answer your question, I will know I'm a believer when my life comes to an end by guarding my faith to the end.

37818, you may not realize it but you have something that Satan wants to take from you, your faith.

We have been warned in several Scripture verses on this. And he will steal it from you if you don't guard it.

Someone will quote John 10:28,

"And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."

It's true that no man can pluck you out of His hands, we pluck ourselves out of His hands by turning back on Christ through unbelief as so many of the Israelites did.

Do you understand Jesus' warning? Matthew 7:21-23, Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? xrefl And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Titus 1:2, In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Hebrews 10:39, But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Romans 8:16, The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: . . .

John 14:16, And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.

Do you understand Hebrews 3:12-14?

Do you understand that the same Israelites who covered their door posts with animal blood (that represented faith in Christ) in Egypt were the same ones who God said, "they will not enter into my rest because of unbelief? They turned back on God through unbelief. Heb. 3:16-19

I'll give you absolute proof that OSAS is not true!

The OT saints were saved the exact same way as we are, by grace through faith. The only difference is that they looked forward to the Cross of Christ through the blood of the animal sacrifice that represented Christ and we look back to the Cross of Christ on the blood He shed there by faith.

Ezekiel 18:21-24

But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.

23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

This is exactly what the Israelites did when they stopped believing in God. They turned from the righteousness of God to unbelief.

It still happens today! Believing no matter what you do you are saved, and you find yourself in the end without faith needed to enter into the gates.

Just as all your sins were blotted out when you placed faith in Christ, all your righteousness is blotted out when faith ceases.

What do I believe to have been different?

Was.

Psalm 51:11-12, Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Now.

John 14:16-17, And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Your agreement with my view is not what is required.
