Wow!

What a great website! I can now sell most of my books as most of the important study ones are here. It is a real blessing that we Christians can benefit from the work of biblecentre.net Much of the works they have on their website are not available anywhere else! Kittle's 10 volumes; Ardnt and Gingrich Greek lexicon; Brown, Driver, Briggs Hebrew lexicon; Lightfoots, commentaries,etc. How do they do it?

They don't! I just now compared my hard copy of Kittel's 10 volumes with the version available at biblecentre.net and found that the Greek fonts are so messed up as to render all 10 volumes unreadable. I took a look at the Bauer, Arndt and Gingrich Greek lexicon and saw that it is the outdated first edition of 1957 (the current edition is the third edition), but that is really inconsequential because the Greek fonts are so messed up as to render it unreadable. And this work is further rendered unreadable because it uses very many abbreviations that are not explained, although they are explained in the hardcopy. The Brown, Driver, Briggs Hebrew lexicon, however, is quite usable, but it is based upon the 1906 edition. I took a look at J. B. Lightfoot’s commentaries and compared them with the hard copies in my home library and found that they have the same problem with Greek fonts as do the works by Kittel and Bauer, Arndt and Gingrich, rendering them very difficult to use.

This is a good website, but don’t throw away your hardcopies!

Re: THE BIBLE CENTRE

Both the BDB and the Gesenius Lexicons appear to be lifted from the Logos/Libronix library of books. From a cursory examination it appears to be mostly there but the links to other source do not function.

The William Gesenius - Hebrew Grammer [sp] (1906)
looks complete except for a missing lettering chart, unfortunately you can't size the text so the Hebrew lettering is almost illegible.

I couldn't get the TDOT to work at all, but noted that it directed me to an old Logos site.

In general it looks good on the outside but functions poorly.

I agree with Craig, don't throw away your books

or better yet purchase the Libronix system for a system that is integrated, complete and works well.

I too had the problem with the fonts. However, if you were to go to the "Read Here First" link on their front page, you will see there is a "font pack" which you can download and install, and I got the fonts to then work. I am not that fussy about the editions being the older ones, that the ones posted on their website are more than enough for the majority of us, as we are not all studying word roots, etc. I am of the opinion that there ought to be the very best of Christian resources available online for us to use, as I myself simply cannot afford much of the better study material that is out there! I applaud the biblecentre.net for their work in meeting the needs of many Christians.

 

...also, you will notice that the Hebrew and Greek fonts are better rendered in other web browsers. I find that SmartFox web browser to be faster and better for this than Explorer. Thought this might help those who don't understand how CSS works!

When I try to use the online Kittel, I get someting like this, with all of the Greek and Hebrew characters transliterated in a non-standard manner.

A. aB;a' in Judaism.
An Aramaic determination aB;a' from ba; “father”, which in the more settled usage of the period of the Mishnah and the Targum takes two forms, first with the pronominal suffix of the 1st person singular (“my father”), 1 and second with that of the 1st person plural (“our father”). The word also serves as a title 2 and a proper name. 3 It is almost never used, however, in relation to God, the form ybia; (  pathvr ) being used in the formula: “My father, who is in heaven”.

How about you? Do you get the Greek and Hebrew characters to come up on your screen?

I have no problems with reading the fonts on my PC, and all the texts from Biblecentre.net come out as per the original. However, I do find that Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser does not show the Greek or Hebrew characters as they should, as there are gaps between some of the words. I found that using another browser solved this problem. You might want to download a really nice and fast web browser which is free, and is better than IE for foreign characters: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/4296

Also, did you download and install the "font pack" from the biblecentre website? You can do so from here: http://www.biblecentre.net/misc/fonts.exe
I could try to help you install it if you have any problems. Hope this helps and solves your problem.

I have no trouble reading Greek fonts on other websites, and when I tried to install the "font pack" I learned that I already have those fonts on my computer. I installed the firefox browser but that had no affect on how Kittel came up on my screen. Are you absolutely positive that when you go to Kittel at biblecentre.net that Greek and Hebrew fonts come up on your screen? Please look up αββα as I did and tell me what you see on your screen.

Yes, I get both the Hebrew and Greek characters in Kittel and all the other works on Biblecentre coming up as the original. This is also the case in Ardnt and Gingrich's Greek lexicon, for exapmle. I suggest that you should extract the fonts into a seperate folder on your PC, and then manually check to see which of the fonts are missing from your font directory in Windows, and then copy those over. Sometimes if there is only one font on your PC that you are trying to install, it tells you that you already have the font, which is true, and then you can assume that you don't need them and cancel the installation. What Windows do you use? Try to contact their webmaster with your problem. I have found him most useful with my own problems, and he suggested the other browser which now works!

 

I just saw the post and found that using Firefox, 0.9.1 I could not read all of the fonts. I downloaded the fonts, but has a couple of them so told them not to overwrite. When fonts were installed using Forefox's download everything came up fine.

BTW - the more I look at Biblecenter the more amazed I am!

P.S. I apologize for my initial criticisms of biblecentre.net. Although some of the material is outdated and incomplete, there is a wealth of valuable and very useful information. Thank you all!

 

I see they have Dave Hunt's 'What Love is This' posted on biblecentre.com I look forward to reading it.
