Best & Worst Preacher's You've Listened To

I am doing this thread in order to increase my lists on who to listen to, as some I respect will offer some good preachers/teachers that I can add to my list. There will also be some to avoid as well that can be added to my list.

Best Preachers I've Listened to:

R.C. Sproul
D. James Kennedy
Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer
D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (you can listen to and/or download hundreds of his tremendous messages by clicking the link)
John MacArthur, Jr.
James Montgomery Boice
Paul Washer
James MacDonald
Most of these preachers can be found here.
You can also listen online here to some quality preaching/teaching (and there may also be radio access in your area as well.)

Preachers I Used to Enjoy But No Longer Do.

Adrian Rogers
Charles Stanley
Chuck Swindoll
*I also want to add Focus on the Family to this list! The theology coming from this group is absolutely horrendous. There is so much focus on 'I' in so many of their speakers that it makes me nauseous.

Worst Preachers I've Listened to:

Jack Hyles
Steven Anderson
Joel Osteen
Robert Schuler
(Insert ALL WoF preachers here, too long of a list.)

- Blessings

curious why you no longer listen to chuck swindoll. stanley I can understand. I turn to soft rock stations when his time comes on in the radio. Adrian Rogers is a good practical preacher, but he's in my "just so-so" list.

have you ever listened to Ravi Zacharias, or the Scotsman (that's my fond nickname for him), Allistair Begg ?

I still listen to Swindoll, simply said I don't enjoy him as much (as well as the others on my list). I probably cannot explain why, I just don't.

Ravi is so-so for me. He doesn't tend to use much Scripture. Once in awhile I get into what he has to say -- not often.

Alistair Begg I enjoy somewhat.

Who are your best/worst/used to's?

- Blessings

It's interesting there are opposites in the likes and dislikes of preachers.

What do you dislike about the ones on your list that you used to enjoy?

Nice list btw. I also enjoy J. Vernon McGee at times when I get a chance to listen to him. W. A. Criswell had a great spirit about him and I've enjoyed him as well.

I've not heard Ray C. Stedman (although I have some of his commentaries) so I will add him to my listen to list.

Some I like now:

John MacArthur Jr.
Paul Washer
J. Vernon McGee (very austere)
Chip Ingram (doesn't get theologically deep, but good practical imo)

Some I used to like, but not as much now:

Adrian Rogers
Charles Stanley
Greg Laurie

One I will not listen to at all:

Ravi Zacharias (doesn't use scripture imo, most is over my head)

I really do like Paul Washer & Francis Chan, but my favorite is Sinclair Ferguson (he is deep). Lloyd-Jones & JM Boice are on my list for guys that have passed on as is Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse (also 10th Presbyterian)

Cool. Make sure you check out the link to Lloyd-Jones.

His sermons in Acts, John, Romans follow virtually word for word his commentary sets. That's a huge plus.

His book 'Joy Unspeakable' is one of the best books I've ever read. I'm almost through with it now.

I read more preachers than i listen to:

I Like to Read:
Chuck Swindoll
David Jeremiah
JM Boice
WA Criswell
ML Jones
Max Lucado - because of the devotional nature of his books, not his theology.

I tuned in to his son Donny the other day. He sure got worked up over...what? I'm not quite sure. Lots of histrionics; not much in the way of biblical exposition.

He got excoriated for that one but I loved it....he proved it all out scripturally.

Next you should try M L-J book 'SPIRITUAL DEPRESSION'

Studies on Sermons On The Mount is great....we should start a book club/bible study on that one alone!!!

This is the kinda stuff I wanted to do at CC but it was not to be.....too many ego's.

Do I have to get depressed before I read that book? LOL! :tongue3:

Yes, SITSOTM is a great work! I recall before I became reformed studyiung those books and thinking how brilliant this man is compared to all these others I had read -- and had no idea it was because he was Reformed -- and a Scot not unlike me!

James Montgomery Boice is very different from one the ex pastors of his church, Donald Grey Barnhouse but I enjoyed them both and still do but it is kind of like at one time enjoyed Zane Gray, to day I don't read him. Didn't say they were bad, just others I would rather read and many that I'm closer to in their soteriology.
Use to go to Orlando for R.C. Sproul's yearly deal. Just tired of him.

John MacArthur, Jr. very good man and as with the other two I disagree with their soteriology and I get tired of him trying to back down on
Dispensationalism but won't back away. I had believe that R.C. Sproul had about turned him away from it. I have enjoyed John over the years but we have been going in different directions, I felt lead to leave Calvinism and led to Free Grace and Dispensationalism and he has felt led to Calvinism. I made my move in the late 60's.
I've enjoyed all three of them and have much of their work on my bookshelves but like chocolate ice cream, I still eat it from time to time, wouldn't throw it out in the trash but I buy vanilla ice cream and eat it most of the time when I have ice cream.
