Good thoughts, brother Jon.

Most of the time, it's about the spirit that we do things in.

Yes, that Means being assertive and aggressive at times. But it also means toning it back and being relational as well.

There are some who think the great commission is not translated as well as it could be. Rather than "go and make disciples" they claim it should read, "as you are going along, make disciples." In other words, it points to evangelism within our sphere of ordinary interaction (barber, mechanic, co=worker, etc). Certainly Jesus interacted with those He met along the way, or in other words, as He was going along. :)

That's the perspective and approach I take. God has blessed and it has been fruitful. To Him be the Glory alone through Christ alone.

I agree.

I wonder how many hours the early church spent developing these methods....or maybe they just went out and witnessed to a dying world of Christ, doing what ever they could to reach those people and marveling at the work God accomplished through them.

I am not sure we can imagine a church, persecuted and tortured, yet growing in number and strength. But this was the experience of the early church, and of many churches around the world today.

Once in 8 years?

Please note. My critics will criticize me no matter what I say or do and that is a plain fact! But to answer the question once in 8 years with street preaching, but dozens and dozens of times with personal one on one evangelism.

So which do you think is more effective? That is what most of us have said - personal one on one evangelism will always be more effective than standing on the street talking to no one.

Precisely why I divide my time up equally. In a typical 90 minute witnessing session I will spend about 70 minutes passing out tracts and talking with lost people and about 20 minutes open air preaching. This is also a reason why its a very good idea to draw a crowd when you open air. Not an easy feat but something I have done a few times and as I do in this sermon.

If you want a good book on evangelism, try God-centred Evangelism by R.B. Kuiper (Banner of Truth. ISBN 0-85151-110-4).
The book is more than 50 years old, but the principles it teaches are timeless. The first five chapters (of 19) are:
1. God the author of evangelism.
2. God's infinite love and evangelism.
3. God's sovereign election and evangelism.
4. God's gracious covenant and evangelism.
5. God's sovereign commission and evangelism.

The author was Presbyterian, but this does not really affect the value of the book.

Dozens and dozens of good books out there and this is just another example.

I think you misunderstand what many of us mean by "friendship evangelism".

At the well Jesus took the time to address the woman and meet on her ground. He shows her an extraordinary kindness in opposition to Jewish custom. He mentions her sin, but not to convict under the Law (infact, not even as a matter if the Law). Instead He acknowledges her adultery as a sign, and she believes because He knew what she thought He couldn't have known.

It is not that friendship evangelism takes months or years but that it is willing to take months or years. There is a difference.
Exactly, as my Father dd not accept Jesus as His Lord until 88, and one of my close friends took some 30 years of witnessing and out reaching to him...

Peter quote does indeed suggest that God wants to use our relatonships as way to out reach to te lost...

Wrong. That's an example of contact evangelism as he did not take years or months to build a relationship. He confronted her in her sin right then and there.

He did it in Love, and we all have lost friends/families that God intends to reach trough our prayers and lifestyle evangelism to them, correct?
God does not want us just to blast them all one time and move on!
