I've been on the minority on this 'round these parts, but no one can refute this mantra that drives my position:

With government money comes government control.

No thanks.

I also have never supported faith based funding programs.

..and we're just talking about "us baptists."

What kind of splinter religions and sequels to scientology shall be spawned?

I wonder how long the guhment has been eyeing the church and thinking "man I'd love to be able to tax the church, too."

We have to fight for "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's."

But it's like the shiny lure that swims by the hungy bass. It looks so good. I can't resist. There CAN'T be anything wrong with it. Something doesn't seem right. But it looks sooooo goooood.....

Yep. This is why I've been opposed to accepting faith based money. In fact, if these banks and car companies and other organizations want bailout money they should be ready to accept government control that comes with it too.

I'm fine with the Office of the President having an Office for Faith Based Initiatives but I would never be part of a church or denomination that accepted funds from it.

Great thread!

One way this could work would be for any charitable contribution of this nature to be worth twice it's face value for deduction purposes on the tax return.

Course this will never happen because, as noted previously, the control ain't there.

I sure hope you all refuse government discounts and benefits such as using your donation receipts for tax benefits.

Cheers,

Jim

Jim, with the Automatic Tax there would be NO tax discounts. Everyone (including a business and non-profits) would pay this tax. The amount is small but would yield sufficient income to pay NECESSARY expenditures.

As long as the % is low, I have no problem with churches paying the tax as well.
On a side note, here in Syracuse, NY one-half of all property is tax exempt as it belongs to churches, non-profits, schools, govt bldgs, ect.

I say everyone pays his REAL fair share!

In Ontario all churches are exempt on property taxes, including schools attached to such property. This was the strong Roman Catholic influence. If they had to pay property taxes they would be bankrupt..

Jarvis St Baptist Church refused this deduction and paid their property taxes every year. They wanted nothing from government...Frankly, I don't know if that is true to-day.

Cheers,

Jim

I don't support Federal monetary aid at all, for anything that might be construed as charity or welfare.

And what, pray tell, is the logic for this "hope"?

I'm gonna take every penny as a deduction that I can legally and without hesitation!!!!!!

Unless your tax system is something different from ours, all this means is the "contributions" value is deleted prior to calculating the owed tax.

IOW you don't pay tax on that portion that you give away.
