I watched O'Reilly's show a couple of times and concluded he's a jerk.

I like O'Reilly and watch his show most of the time.

I did watch the particular show in question.

I do not necessarily agree with his remarks concerning the Hornbeck situation, but that doesn't mean he couldn't be right in some aspect, although I would not have made such a bold statement so quickly following Shawn's recovery.

I do not see any reason to withhold my support based on this one view.

I will not make excuses for him or say he was taken out of context, but he is entitled to his opinion on the matter, whether over the existence of Stockholm Syndrome as a reality or whether Shawn might have enjoyed not having to be in school. I don't know what kind of kid he was, so I dont know whether he would have liked or disliked not being in school. That said, I would not pin any blame of this situation on Shawn nor do I think O'Reilly was suggesting that. Of course, I could be wrong.

Still, O'Reilly has done so much good for so many children across America, it's going to take more than some silly comment such as this for me to turn him off. Personally, I think people are blowing this out of proportion and trying too hard to read something into what he said. Perhaps not.

I would be willing to bet that most who wrote in this thread about O'Reilly being a jerk already disliked him and his program before this issue, Martin excluded, of course.

btw, Mike, O'Reilly does not believe in the death penalty, for rapist or otherwise. Just thought I'd let you know.

    Hmmm...

    pros
    NOT going to school

    cons
    sytematically abused
    raped
no contact with my parents or friends/family
    generally held against my will

Woo-hoo, the pros outweigh the cons. I get to miss school.

You've got to be kidding me. For anyone to still claim that this KID was happy he was able to miss school, is beyond my comprehension. For pity's sake would you, if your were a kid, think school was so bad that you would rather be raped and held against your will? :BangHead:

    D28,
O'Reilly is NOT a journalist he is a political talking head. His show does not present the news, it is a an editorial forum to discuss opinions of the news. Opposing views are often squelched and/or interupted and yelled over. Which is fine, it is his show, but it is definitely NOT news, or fair and balanced.

Would I? No way. I actually enjoyed learning. But I do not know this kid from Adam, so he may have enjoyed it, I don't know. Besides, I did not say that he liked everything about being kidnapped. I don't believe O'Reilly said that either.

I'll use myself as an example. I was out of work for 5 months after being laid off last year. My previous employer lied about me to the state workforce commission (who, incidently, launched an investigation and found in my favor), I had to live off my savings, I could barely afford anything at all, I had to borrow money from family members, and I generally hated not having a job for that long. All that said, there was a plus in that I had a lot of free time to pretty much do anything I wanted, so long as it was cheap or free. Now that I'm back to work, I do not have all of those negative things going on, but I do miss having so much free time. Does that mean that I enjoyed being unemployed? Absolutely not! I hated it!

Sat whatever you want about me for seeing this, but it has not been long since I was that age. I would say that I'm probably younger, at 24, than any other poster on this thread, so I clearly remember what it was like at that age and what most kids that age (which I would still refer to as kids nowadays) think about things. It really is not a far stretch for me to think that this kid might have enjoyed that aspect of the ordeal, even if he hated it by 99.99999% and enjoyed that one thing with the other .00001%. Again, I do not know what type of person he is or was.

That aside, I think I can guarantee you that he will start out loving school now and come to hate it pretty quickly when he realizes just how much work it is and how far behind he is from others his age. Hopefully, that will pass with time and he will come to enjoy it again.

I always found learning to be fun and never did understand why the other kids in school didn't think so as well.

Please note: I do not condone rape, kidnapping, or abuse and I have no doubt that this kid was kept against his will and that he was not happy with his situation.

what about the child's family situation being worse than the kidnapping which would be an incentive not to go back?

speaking of which, is that what ORLY stands for? I hate him just because of that then.

These widely different views just expose how morally confused too many who call themselves Christians really are, which is also why we have liberals controlling two branches of our government today.

Maybe for a "normal" kid, but not for abused children. School is an escape from the reality of hell on earth situations. You enjoying your free time, even though you hated being out of work is no comparison.

And your not that much younger than I, (28).

Hmmm. I thought for sure I heard him express a view in favor of it in some cases, but I could be wrong. I recall him sometimes saying that he feels that life imprisonment...with zero possibility of parole...doing hard labor that would in some way benefit society would be better than the death penalty.

Also, in response to another post I realise that O'Reilly's show is an editorial program and not a newscast. I believe it is a very much needed editorial show in that it balances off some of the ridiculous ultra liberal nonsense "editorial shows" that out number the conservative ones about 75-1 or so.

If that opinion was the alternative to "liberal nonsense", then liberals have taken a u-turn in regard to crime and punishment.
