That he is. But his basic point is true. Haiti is a welfare state, led by corrupt tyrants. I pray the Aermican people's resolve is strong enough to never accept such leadership. Also, giving aid without oversight would be foolish.

Haiti is a failed state. That much is a given. But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't aid the victims of the earthquake. What is does mean is that the US, possibly under UN auspices but principally under its own steam, will probably have to de facto occupy the country for a few years. It's happened before...

We don't need to occupy the country. We cannot be the world's police. If the Hatians are happy to live under tyrants, there is nothing we can do. We can try to help, and Americans obviously are giving the most, once again, but the Hatian government has stated nobody can leave the country, and they want to be the ones who distribute the foreign aid supplies, & money. It is a lost cause.

I really don't think most Haitians want to live under dictatorship. Washington played at least a shadowy role in the ousting of Aristide in 2004 and has intervened many times before in Haitian affairs, so it's not as if it is without precedent. I would also hazard that, altruism aside, it is in the US' interests to have a stable, rather than unstable, neighbour.

Hogwash, Matt. The U.S. has given Haiti more foreign aid than any other country has. Why is it the Dominican Republic thrives ?

Private charities will help more than any government action can. If it's overthrow of a dictator that is needed, I cite the "outrage" of the world once Sadaam was removed as a reason to stay out of it.

You all know I like Fox news.. but I have really been disappointed over the last 2 days..
Wednesday night.. I had to watch CNN because Fox wasn't covering the Earthquake.. it had some political show on...

Some things preempts politics... EVen Clinton is working with "W"!...

Where did I say it was the US' fault? I just said there is a history of intervention (most notably 1915-1934) to try to stabilise the country, so it's not unprecedented.

Point taken, but my point about a culture willing to live under tyranny stands. Until things in Haiti change, the foreign aid will only benefit the tyrants.

Basically just like most (all??) of the aid given to 3rd world Dicta-- er-- countries!

If they don't trust us to distribute what we give (or at least have over-sight of it), then we ought to stay out of it - generally!!!

To get back to the original topic, I saw the Factor last night, and three times during the segment on Haiti O'Reilly advocated aiding Haiti, and in fact has done a lot himself to steer help down there. So to say that he seems to be labeling Haiti a lost cause isn't true (to put it kindly). His point is simply that vast amounts of aid have gone to Haiti and vanished without helping anyone because of the deep and rampant corruption there, and that if we really want to help that country our leaders, beginning with Obama, need to take action to assure greater accountability for everything that is sent there. Nothing hard-hearted about that at all. Quite the opposite, in fact, if one puts aside their personal feelings toward the man and really thinks about it.

Well, Hati had better get ready for an invasion. Our military is being deployed there. This should help martial up the distribution of aid.
