Birth Control

Is it ok to use contraception/birth control to prevent births? I think it is ok so long as one does not use an abortifacient form of birth control or contraception.

In another thread you mentioned you believed life begins at conception.

Would a birth control method that prevented implantation of the blastocyst (the fertilized egg) into the womb be considered an abortifacient?

What options would you consider acceptable?

Unwanted Children?????? What Christian would not want children?
I thought that is why God put us on the earth, to be fruitful and multiply.
I guess that's one rule the Catholics have that's good. Birth Control is a BIG NO NO. Now being of the medical field I can understand if you have a condition that being pregnant or giving birth would prove harmful to yourself or the baby.

We already fruited and multiplied, we've filled the earth... but some of the fruit is rotten. :tear:

So Deacon, does that mean we Christians should have more children (ie, not use birthcontrol) in order that we "make up" for the rotten fruit?

What do you consider rotten Black, Oriental, Red, Brown or White? If you say some of every race, who made you judge over what God has brought forth? A lot of the greatest contributors to humanity, in the arts and sciences have been orphans and illegitimate "unwanted" children.

In fact if we look deep into our very own hearts we will see that we are all rotten and deserve death but Jesus died for the ungodly. Jesus died for the rotten, shouldn't that tell you what God thinks of the rotten? He loved them enough to send his righteous Son to die for them/us. That we might have life. Life is God given by Grace. If we have the mind of Christ we should likewise give all that we have for the life of the "rotten".

I would recommend reading the book Vital Signs by Mark Blocher; Moody Press.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize that the question was only asking about Christians using contraceptives. I was somehow under the impression that non-Christians use them and thought the question included them also. My mistake. :BangHead: I'll be more careful in the future to read between the lines for the hidden meaning.

Why do you think that so many children are abused by their parents (as I was), and even sometimes thrown away in the trash when they're born or killed by a parent? It's because there are children who are not wanted. In the eyes and minds of their mother, father, or both they were a mistake and not a blessing.

Many run away from home because they feel unloved and unwanted. Many turn to others to look for the love they aren't getting at home. Many turn to drugs, drink, and sex looking for the love they crave and aren't getting at home, and I'm taking about CHILDREN and TEENS. Many (like myself) turn inward and become reclusive, withdrawn and a loner--unable to relate to people and unable to make friends.

I'm a Christian and have 2 children. I want no more. The old saying comes into play with me, "I wouldn't take a million bucks for my kids, and I wouldn't take a million bucks to have anymore." With a world that is full, I think we have been fruitful and multiplied. Where do you stop hawg_427? How many is affordable? How many is enough to have fulfilled the "be fruitful and multiply" thing?

I only have two, but has God given new commandment to cease and desist? For replenishment 4 is the number. The burden for our care is going to bankrupt our Children. I'm not talking about my two but the rest of the baby boomers that will enter retirement will overload Social Security and Health Care. Why? 49 million reasons why.

Two Children to go and have a family of their own will have an aging father and mother plus a MIL and FIL to care for. Four people to be a burden plus their own children. If any family is to be faithful to God's call for replenishment then 4 children and more is the number.

My wife and I have had three children. The first was miscarried at three months, and the last, our son, was born three months premature and lived three days. My wife almost died due to complications with Daniel, so we took steps to prevent any further pregnancies. Does that make us wrong? Not that I see.

Children are a blessing, but nowhere in God's word does it say you have to pop out as many as you can. Birth control was even used back in bible times. We know it as the rhythm method, counting the days of a woman's cycle. It's just that we have more and differenet means available nowadays.

If an egg is not fertilized, there was no life lost. That same egg will still be handled just like it would have done without contraceptive. There is no difference.

In our family, with my many years of infertility, we've taken a bit of a different approach to contraception. A baby is a blessing. Any baby is a blessing. I myself was an "unwanted child" - born to an unwed mother who happened to be a minister's daughter and a married father. A pretty difficult situation but one where my birth mother decided to give me life rather than going the "easy way out" and put me up for adoption. I honor her and thank her for that gift.

Now that my husband and I are older (43 and 48) and our children are 5, 7, 16 and 18, we feel we are most likely finished having children. The funny thing is that after my two miscarriages (after our second child), we discovered a "cure" to my infertility and now, after all those years of fertility treatments and tears, I can get pregnant easily. But fortunately, with my new-found fertility, my fertility signs are unmistakable and so we take other precautions during the few days that I would be fertile. This last month there was a chance that we miscalculated thanks to a large ovarian cyst and while we were not LOOKING to have another baby and it would take some adjustment to having another one (we finally just got rid of every bit of baby stuff we have - I know, I know - a guarantee to have one more child but we took our chances - LOL), we'd welcome another baby with open arms.

One thing that I learned through my fertility treatments was the God is the one who allows life to happen. At one point I had 10 great eggs release, everything tested perfect yet I didn't become pregnant. So the correct timing, egg+sperm does not always equal baby. It was humbling.

Bottom line - any form of birth control that affects the implantation or development of a fertilized egg would not be an allowable form. But to prevent the meeting of the two, I do not see the problem with it. A bigger problem to me is the heart of the parents and how they see a potential pregnancy. Is it something to mourn or to rejoice in? And if it's something to mourn, is it because of a fear of health for the mother as in Trotter's case or is it because of the "inconvenience"? That will tell a lot.

So...we should have 4 kids...even if we can't afford 4 kids?

Your logic is flawed. We shouldn't base the number of kids we have on the number needed to sustain Social Security.

I have a better idea: let's not have social (in)security....and everyone can have as many kids as God lays on their heart to have.

(do not construe the above as an endorsement of abortificant birth control, or abortions themselves. I approve of neither). :saint:
