Black Drivers Make up Majority of Minneapolis Police Searches During Routine Traffic Stops

Reynolds, I have a question
As a LEO - when you have decided to pull someone over esp for just a routine traffic stop (speeding, missing light, ect) how often are you able to tell the race of the driver?
On night shift, 99% of the time, I did not know the race of the driver. On day shift I knew the race on most stops.

Minneapolis police stop and search a disproportionate rate of Black and East African drivers and their vehicles during routine traffic stops compared with other races.

The city is predominantly white, yet Black and East African drivers accounted for 78% of police searches that started as stops for moving or equipment violations from June 2019 through May 2020, according to Minneapolis police data. Whites made up 12% of searches during the same types of stops in that time frame.

For Black and East African drivers, 26% of searches resulted in arrest, compared with 41% of whites, according to the data.

Let's be honest. Minnesota is a racist state. Since it's inception as a State, indigenous people have been profiled and beat down. With African Americans, Southeast Asians and Somalians, they all realize that Minnesota Nice means, don't cause waves and stay in your lane.
Minnesota may be one of the most racist States in the nation.

So is Hawaii. Those groups you just mentioned are not welcomed here as is. They have to adopt the customs first or it’s a no.

requesting others to adopt customs is NOT racist - its "When in Rome, do as the Romans"

And why is that?

Good question. Is it because the State is a majority of German and Scandinavian immigrants who have occupied the northern frontier for 160 plus years? Who knows. What is obvious is that people of color who live in Minnesota will be treated nice if they don't make waves in the land of 10,000 lakes. If they raise their voice against those in power, they will be silenced.

Minnesota is a racist State.

It would be interesting to know how many of these searches came about because of simply asking the driver if they can search.

Cops need probable cause to search a vehicle, unless the driver gives permission.

So the cop, without PC, asked the driver if they have anything illegal in the car (which is perfectly ok). The driver says no and the cop says, “you don’t mind if we look in the car then“. If the driver agrees, then the cops search the car...every time.

Maybe minorities say, “sure I have nothing to hide” more than whites. Maybe minorities from some countries fear the police will choke them to death after they have them in handcuffs and are more inclined to agree to the search.

peace to you

Complete inane speculation.

Minnesota arrest records show that males make up roughly 75% of all arrests, therefore Minnesota law enforcement is blatantly sextet. Prove me wrong.

Or maybe the minorities are afraid to say "no" to a search by police.

Or maybe the police don't bother to ask many whites because past history has shown they will say no and if the police try anything the white driver will lawyer up. Maybe the police know that minorities won't have a lawyer or can't afford one.

One thing for sure, according to many posters here on BB, it most certainly, absolutely, emphatically, is not racial bias.

I don’t automatically think it’s racial bias. Statistics are often used to push a “cause/effect” agenda, when none exists.

Maybe minorities violate minor traffic laws more often than others for some unknown reason. Age is probably more of a factor than race. I still maintain any benefit of doubt should go to police unless shown otherwise.

Yes, speculation. I always appreciate your input but the word “inane” might be a little harsh. I really don’t know what “inane” means, I think it might not be a compliment.

peace to you

Its not a commentary on you just the post.

Stanford researchers found police across the country pull over and search Black and Hispanic drivers at higher rates than whites. Yet the “hit rate” — the frequency of the search yielding contraband — is similar for Black and white drivers and lower for Hispanic ones. The Stanford study also found police are less likely to pull over people of color after sunset, when it’s more difficult to see the race of the driver.

Well, with all this emphasis on "STATISTICS", I'm reminded of the old saw, " Figures don't lie, BUT liars figure."
Statistics can be manipulated to prove most anything - if the full range of criteria are not considered!!!!!!
Sorta like the MSM is well versed in omitting certain contexts if they can use a "stand-alone" statement to crucify a conservative!
