Black Students In The U.S. Get Criminalized While White Students Get Treatment

When black and white kids act up or display troubling behavior at schools, teachers and administrators often address it with differing responses split along racial lines, new research shows.

Black students are more likely to be punished with suspensions, expulsions or referrals to law enforcement, a phenomenon that helps funnel kids into the criminal justice system. Meanwhile, white kids are more likely to be pushed into special education services or receive medical and psychological treatment for their perceived misbehaviors, according to a study released last week in the journal Sociology of Education.

Overall, this pattern often leads to the criminalization of young black students and the medicalization of white students.

The study, conducted by Pennsylvania State University assistant professor of sociology and criminology David Ramey, analyzed the rates of suspensions, expulsions and police referrals at 59,000 schools across the country. He also looked at how many students in these schools were enrolled in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, two programs designed to help kids in need of special services.

Ramey found that schools with larger populations of black students also had higher rates of suspensions, while schools with more white students had a greater number of kids in programs designed for students with special needs.

No surprises here CTB except to those who deny the disparate treatment that stretches from youth to adult for Blacks in some areas.

Yes, you are correct. It is not surprising that some refuse to see, much less admit, to any of the problems our society has in this area.

You've been had again.

What Huffpo isn't telling you is that most of the "criminalizing" is being done by black teachers in majority black schools.

Hillarious! You fall for this stuff everytime.

What a crock!

We all know that Ariana Huffington hates America and makes her millions off of it at the same time!

This is a crock, because I spent the majority of my life working with low income blacks and Hispanics, and through programs like CETA, and the SYETP, white kids were not being given anything, while those of low income families were given tons of help getting jobs training, medical assistance, and even mental health care. I can prove this because I was there. In the pits with these kids and their parents, working to make sure they had a hand up in time of need. And I watched many of these kids go unto successful blue collar jobs. Now that is doing something about the problem, and not just blowing smoke up the white folks smoke stack! CTB doesn't know what he is talking about, and I doubt if he has ever taken the time to help out those in the Barrios and Ghettos to find a way out? Well I have, so, Ariana Huff knows very little about what the real score is! I suggest she get out of her million dollar fortress and spend a few years helping the under-employed; unemployed and in need!

BTW - I doubt if many of you can proclaim to have been part of a monthly service at your rescue mission? My wife and I spent 24+ years going every month, plus on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Again, we worked to get the Gospel to those in need. And we are middle-class whites. We show our love in the way God meant it to be shown! Not in some editorial that blames whites for the problems of every other color of people on this earth! And we weren't the only whites helping the underprivileged. There were a lot of us! It riles me up to read this kind of trash, and crabby needs to put up or shut up.

You can't sit on the sidelines and Monday morning quarterback life. Get in the game, or be part of the blame! As for me and my family, we have nothing to be ashamed of!

Actually what happens is that white teachers just let black students run wild because of the soft bigotry of low expectations--Crabtown, do you expect black students to be treated the same as everyone else or do you think that there should be one set of rules for black students and another set of rules for white students? I mean, you have said that you are an intellectual.

Petty sure he and Zaac want different rules/expectations. I'm pretty sure someday the two of them will tell us blacks deserve their own water fountains and special seating in the back of the bus.

Maybe they are engaging in activities that require suspension more often. Ever think about that.

There article does not come anywhere near close to proving that.

Do you think folks should have different rules/expectations/punishments dependent on race ?

The author of the study admits:

One weaknessof the study is that there was no information on the number or type of behavioral incidents taking place at schools. Of course, some schools experience more disruptive and violent behavior than others, and that could provoke school leaders to respond differently. A question for future research is whether school officials cope better with student behavior using a mental health process when the number of incidents is small. But as violent and disruptive behavior escalates, Ramey wonders if there is a tipping point where frustration provokes school officials to call in the police and issue tougher consequences.

Another weakness of the study is that you can't tell, by race, which students in a school were being punished or steered into mental health counseling. It is unknown if the students who were punished were more likely to be black or low-income, or if a black student in a predominantly white school was more likely to be punished or to receive mental health care.

IOW The "study" creates more questions than it does answers.

Different people want different things from public education. For example, Chicago public school teachers at the rate of 50% send their own children to parochial schools. The Obamas sent their children to private schools. Most rich people send their children to private schools.
