Black suspect dies after Baltimore cops break his spine in ‘brutal’ police beating

A man injured after being arrested by the Baltimore police died today, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Freddie Gray had to undergo a double surgery on three broken vertebrae and an injured voice box on Tuesday, after he was released by the police. He died today after days of remaining in a coma.

The 27-year old was arrested last week for an undisclosed violation. The police said that he was restrained on the ground by an officer during the arrest, but appeared to be fine when he was taken to the district station. However, a cell phone video shows that the arresting officers used force that some may seen as “brutal.”

Protests have broken out in his neighborhood since Gray was sent to the hospital.

“What happened to Freddie was unnecessary and uncalled for,” the Rev. Jamal Harrison Bryant of the Empowerment Temple said to protestors on Saturday. “All of those police officers involved need to be held accountable and answer for what they did, and need to be terminated from their positions,” he urged.

The case is pending a review by a “blue-ribbon” panel commissioned by the police.

The day after a protest in his honor, Freddie Gray has passed away. His family contacted WJZ Sunday morning. The mayor’s office confirmed his death Sunday afternoon.

At 1:30, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Police Commissioner Anthony Batts will hold a press conference.

The idea behind the vigil by family and friends was to keep pressure on police & the mayor to determine what really happened to Freddie Gray.

Mike Schuh has more on Saturday’s protest.

When being arrested, Freddie Gray couldn’t walk, but it gets worse. Soon his voice box will be partially crushed, 3 bones in his neck will be broken.

Last week, police released a timeline of the arrest. Investigators say they first encountered Gray at 8:39 a.m. at the corner of North and Mount streets, but he ran away.

At 8:40 a.m., they caught up with him and took him into custody in the 1700 block of Presbury. Two minutes later, officers called for a prisoner transport van.

At 8:54 a.m., Gray was put in additional restraints inside the van. Police say video surveillance shows he was conscious and talking.

But, at 9:24 a.m., an ambulance was called to the Western District police station to take him to the hospital.

Now friends and family members want to know what happened between 8:54 a.m. when the van left and 9:24 a.m. when Gray needed medical attention at the police station.

“It wasn’t right. And the time frame that they’re saying the time the ambulance came just don’t add up,” said Anthony Melvin, friend. “Where was he at and what was they doing at the time? That time should be accounted for.”

Police can’t or won’t say how he ended up on a ventilator, in a coma.

Seriously? You say that a man is conscious and talking at 854 and then 30 minutes later , he magically has a crushed voice box and 3 broken vertebrae?

City police wrote in court documents that Freddie Gray was arrested "without force or incident" for having a switchblade knife and suffered a medical emergency during transport.

The documents provide the first account of Gray's arrest last week during which time he was critically injured and later died. The case has sparked outrage and police have said little about the circumstances, saying the case was under investigation.

The account is provided in charging documents filed in District Court, where officer Garrett Miller wrote that Gray was stopped because he "fled unprovoked upon noticing police presence." When Gray, 25, was stopped, they found a knife clipped to the inside of his front pants pocket and placed him under arrest.

"The defendant was arrested without force or incident," Miller wrote. "During transport to Western District via wagon transport the defendant suffered a medical emergency and was immediately transported to Shock Trauma via medic."

City police have said that video of the incident — which shows a portion of the arrest — does not show use of force at the time of Gray's arrest, and the cause of his injuries remains unclear.

An attorney hired by Gray's family said his spinal cord was severed. He underwent extensive surgery at Shock Trauma, but died Sunday morning, a week after the April 12 incident.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.

Tell me about it. All Americans should be outraged. And they conveniently can't account for what happened during that 30 minutes.

Just disgusting.

This is the classic psychological multi-personalty syndrome. One person answering his own statement, and complimenting himself when no one else buys into his bait to draw others in. Must be something in the water in Atlanta

This is classic old, white man cuckoo syndrome. You got a reading problem like so many of your compatriots. I was responding to robustheologian. But acknowledging that wouldn't have allowed you to take a dig.

So either you are attempting to insinuate that Zaac and robustheologian are the same person, or you failed to see that Zaac was responding to robustheologian.

Which is it? Can you man up and give a straight answer or will you deflect?
