Good news on National Book Lovers Day: A chapter a day might keep the Grim Reaper away — at least a little longer.

A recent study by Yale University researchers, published online in the journal Social Science & Medicine, concluded that “book readers experienced a 20 percent reduction in risk of mortality over the 12 years of follow-up compared to non-book reader.

The data was obtained from a longitudinal Health and Retirement Study sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. The study looked at 3,635 subjects, all older than 50, whom the researchers divided into three groups: those who didn’t read books, those who read up to 3.5 hours a week and those who read more than 3.5 hours a week.

The findings were remarkable: Book readers survived almost two years longer than those who didn’t crack open a book.

Accounting for variables such as education level, income and health status, the study found that those who read more than 3.5 hours weekly were 23 percent less likely to die during that 12-year period. Those who read up to 3.5 hours — an average of a half-hour a day — were 17 percent less likely.

In other words, just like a healthy diet and exercise, books appear to promote a “significant survival advantage,” the authors concluded.

Why or how that’s the case remains unclear; the research showed only an association between book reading and longevity, not a causal relationship. But the findings are not so surprising. Other recent research showed that reading novels appears to boost both brain connectivity and empathy.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The bad news: Americans barely crack the top 25 when it comes to which countries read the most books. India, Thailand and China are ranked one, two and three by the World Culture Index, while the United States comes in 23rd, behind countries such as Egypt, Australia, Turkey and Germany.

Who wants to live very long in this crummy world?

I do.

After all as Candide said, "This is the best of all possible worlds."

I love life. I want to see what is around the next corner. Life is an adventurous journey.

For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it [Matthew 16:25].

And have you joyfully given your life to Christ?

Do you not appreciate the life He has given you?

Why would you not want a long life so you can serve him longer?

p.s. your inferred meaning of the verse is a most liberal interpretation and here I thought you were conservative. Guess I was wrong.

Yep.

Yeah, but lousy as it is, I'm ready to chunk itl.

Why would you not want a long life so you can serve him longer?

Oh, is that the end of our serving him?

p.s. your inferred meaning of the verse is a most liberal interpretation and here I thought you were conservative. Guess I was wrong.

Going by the exact working is a liberal interpretation? It takes one to make that claim.

I'd bet this is correlation-not-causation scenario.

I do not believe the reason is known. It is interesting in that studies have shown that people who sit for long periods of time watching TV have shorter lives than those who do not watch much TV. This may come from lack of activity or some other reason.

.

Maybe it is time to sit down and think on how you can make it better. One proven way is not to worry about self but to get outside your own self through concentrating on helping others. Eacaping self centered concentration is a sure cure. Helping others brings happiness to both the helper and the helpee.

I just think that we are probably looking at a factor Z among factors X (book reading) and Y (increased lifespan). My guess is a common factor or set of factors yields both X and Y rather than anything actually being causal between X and Y. The TV idea is a possible option, but reading a book is also a sedentary activity (except for audiobooks).

I would want to know what is making a person want to read a book instead of doing something else. That could give us a clue as to where we should look.

Your meaning is likely becoming a democrat.

If you mean am I suicidal? No, But would I welcome a home going at any minute. Yeup.

I've been suicidal before, but even in the brightest moments, being caught up by God is always a good thing. Now, I'd be much less thrilled with dying as a means of accomplishing it. I have kids and all. But Christ's return? Absolutely!
