Hey, CTB - you know what the problem with that cartoon is?

Isn't it even remotely possible that those congressmen/women were actually representing the will of the people in the districts/states they actually represent?

And if it is possible, even remotely, then shouldn't we be congratulating congress for actually working for the people who elected them, rather than publishing a political cartoon that vilifies them for the cartoonist's personal political views?

Roughly nine in 10 Americans (91%) say they would vote for a law requiring criminal background checks for all U.S. gun purchasers.

http://pollingmatters.gallup.com/2013/04/senate-defeats-background-check-measure.html

Probably not as quite a majority, 91%, of Americans are in favor of background checks. The politicians are more interested in money for their campaigns than in the will of the people.

Same answer as above ... large majority are in favor of background checks.

That "large majority" consists of "a random sample of 1,013 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia." So they asked roughly 20 people in each of the 51 "states".

That's not a majority by any means.

And if you will bother to read that entire polling page, the support is not nearly as unanimous as the headline writers would like people to think.

CTB - this is your problem. You're reading with filters; and you don't critically read your own sources.

From the Gallup article:
Political scientist Brian Schaffner did an analysis (posted on themonkeycage.org) of support in each state for stricter gun control laws and the votes of the two senators from each state on the assault weapons ban bill that was also voted on Wednesday. The results show a very high relationship in general between the two variables. In other words, using a measure of public opinion on gun control at the state level and a vote by the state’s senators on a gun control bill, Schaffner shows that there is a strong correlation. The senators in this instance were in fact generally representing their constituencies.

Good morning. Hope you rested well.

I think you missed my point, which was - a poll of 1,000 people out of 250 million adult Americans in no way represents a "majority". And we would be well served if politicians stopped voting by polls and voted as true representatives of the people which they did in this case.

No doubt the senators were cowards, just like the Jews who wouldn't revile the ministry of John the Baptist for fear of the people.

Crabby, you really should get your head out of the "the zero is always right" sand.

Just one example:

Seems to me that if 90% supported the gun bill, there would be a whole lot more in attendance here, doncha think????

90% one of the silliest things Obama has said. He like to create narratives out of thin air to convince others who would otherwise not be convinced. The most dishonest President in history.

President Obama’s misleading claims about universal background checks distort reality

In the same speech, President Obama claimed that the “overwhelmingly majority of gun owners” support universal background checks, particularly when it comes to the so-called ‘gun show loophole.’

“But we know, for example, from polling that universal background checks are universally supported just about by gun owners,” Obama said. “So if we’ve got lobbyists in Washington claiming to speak for gun owners saying something different, we need to go to the source and reach out to people directly. We can’t allow those filters to get in the way of common sense.”

Not only was the remark categorically inaccurate (obviously the President cannot prove that every single gun owner in America supports universal background checks) his comment over-simplifies the polling he was likely referencing. The only recent public poll taken on universal background checks was taken in only three states — Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut — all three of which are generally considered “blue states” and are states Obama won in the last two presidential elections. The poll was not taken on a national basis, so it is impossible to know if all or even a majority of gun owning and non-gun owning Americans support universal background checks.

BREAKING: New USA Today Poll Shows Support for New Gun Bill Now at 49% – NOT 90%

If you’re tired of hearing the Obama administration parroting poll numbers that say 90% of the American people support an expanded background check bill, you’ll be glad to hear that a new USA Today poll has found that support for the passage of ANY new gun control law is between 45-49%, down significantly since the first of the year.

One has to wonder if the change in public opinion has to do with the strong efforts of the NRA and GOA to educate the American people about what the current laws actually are, what new laws would actually do, and on firearms in general.

These numbers come on the heels of a Gallup poll showing that only 4% of the population thinks gun control is actually an important issue.

When a committed zero follower buries his head in the sand he naturally gets his eyes full of that same sand and is therefore burdened with a very blurred vision of facts.
So addicted that he refuses to even consider any contrary options than mandated by the DNC.
Sad, but true!!!:BangHead:

Background checks are fine I guess, but does anyone really think this will prevent any crime? It will just end up being a layer of government for already law abiding citizens. Perhaps focusing on being a responsible gun owner, couldn't hurt and bound to more effective then forms and red tape.

Give up your liberty. Give up your guns. Worship the state. The police are your new gods and protecting angels. Follow their orders without question.

Crabby, Hitler would be proud of you.

Brave men defend their liberties. Cowards hide behind those trying to take them away.

Cowards believe the almighty state will keep them safe. When history shows an almighty state always turns on it's own and devours them just as cowards always call brave men cowards for not worshiping the power of a corrupt government.

How do you feel about background checks?
