Officials from the Pentagon confirmed reports to Fox News on Tuesday that Iran was retaliating against US facilities in Iraq after an airstrike that killed Qassem Soleimani, a top leader of the Iranian military.

A senior military source told Fox News' Jennifer Griffin that the attacks were "all over the country."

"Under missile attack from Iran," the short statement read. "These are either cruise missiles or short range ballistic missiles. All over the country."

So my question is if Iran has the ability to hit the US with long range missiles why are they using these short range? Maybe because they are liars?

Iran lie? Surely not.

About time for us to hit them with a few of our best missiles.

They also said they were pulling out of the Iran-Nuke deal, as if they ever adhered to it in the first place....

Do you not think the US should defend itself?

If there are numerous casualties from this then we are going to end up doing something. I’ll wait for the damage reports. No need to go arm chair Warhawk right now. If this is Iran doing “something” so they can save domestic political face and live up to their promise then lets slow down.

So the only time we should defend ourselves is if someone dies? Are you serious?

We knew this was coming. The cycle of escalation must be broken. We could win a war with Iran but it would be costly and leave us vulnerable to the other mega powers. This is a critical night with a critical decision. This can’t be about ego and tough talk.

Bigger picture man. You have to consider second and third order effects. Operational planning 101.

The way I see it, we should take care of this like Jimmy Carter should have done decades ago.

There are a lot more geopolitical factors to consider here. Everybody seems to think this would be some simple kinetic exercise. Also, consider what is happening with a largely Shiite Iraqi government and a possible resistance forming of Shiite guerillas because Iraq wants us out. Iraq would be a vital staging area if we were to go to war. We already have established airfields and infrastructure we have built over fifteen years. Probably wouldn’t want to be fending off insurgents again at the same time.

Again, temperance is vital.

You seem to assume people don't think about the other factors.

I have yet to see a post on here to indicate otherwise. All I’ve seen from people on here and on my feed are a bunch of dumb memes. I even got the corny Toby Keith song that veterans have been assaulted with for over a decade.

Which Toby Keith song are you referencing?

And here are the major things to consider:

1. Terrorist insurgents. However, we are already having to deal with those. You seem to think more will come into play, I find that hard to believe, but, yes, that is a possibility.
2. Russia. Russia is a major factor in this whole operation given their status with Iran as an ally.
3. Other countries in the region. Other countries are not happy with Iran either and would likely join the US in an operation against the country after we make the initial move.

Those are the major factors at play right now.

Update: Early indicatation is that rockets landed in non populated areas. Some Iraqi casualties reported. Tweet from Iran seems to indicate they got their shot in and now place the ball in Trumps hands. This is an easy win for Trump if he takes. He will be able to show strength and temperance in one week. Fingers crossed.
