Remember hurrican Charley? What did all the liberal media and the democrats say after Bush visited the devastated area? He responded too soon. "He's just trying to curry votes in Florida." Now just because he didnt hang glide right into the superdome the day after, "He doesnt like blacks."



"Even before many residents were allowed back into their own homes, President Bush headed to Punta Gorda for his own first hand look, getting a bird's eye view from his helicopter and a quick briefing from his brother the governor and local leaders.

Consoling those who have lost everything, Mr. Bush assured devastated residents that help is on the way.

"The government's job is to help people re-build their lives and that's what's happening," he said.

Even before the storm hit, the president declared four counties disaster areas to speed federal money to victims. But that quick response fueled suspicion that he is using disaster politics to help his campaign in one of the most critical battleground states, a notion the president dismissed Sunday.

"Yeah, and if I didn't come they'd have said he should have been here more rapidly," Mr. Bush said.

The president is trying not to repeat his father's mistakes. After Hurricane Andrew flattened parts of south Florida in 1992, state officials blamed the first President Bush for not answering their calls for help quickly enough, and trying to make up that by overcompensating later.

There was a striking dicrepancy between the CNN International report on the Bush visit to the New Orleans disaster zone, yesterday, and reports of the same event by German TV. ZDF News reported that the president's visit was a completely staged event. Their crew witnessed how the open air food distribution point Bush visited in front of the cameras was torn down immediately after the president and the herd of 'news people' had left and that others which were allegedly being set up were abandoned at the same time. The people in the area were once again left to fend for themselves, said ZDF. [War And Piece]

"I understand that the U.S. Forest Service had water-tanker aircraft available to help douse the fires raging on our riverfront, but FEMA has yet to accept the aid. When Amtrak offered trains to evacuate significant numbers of victims -- far more efficiently than buses -- FEMA again dragged its feet. Offers of medicine, communications equipment and other desperately needed items continue to flow in, only to be ignored by the agency.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco Refused Bush Aid

Though her state has been devastated by Hurricane Katrina and thousands are believed dead in New Orleans, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco has refused to allow the federal government to take control of evacuation efforts.

"Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans," the Washington Post reported in Sunday editions.


Gov. Blanco's office rejected the request, the paper said - concerned that such a move would be comparable to a federal declaration of martial law.

May I comment as a foreigner on Mr. Bush. I firmly believe that he honestly believes he is doing the right thing and he sticks to his guns. I don't, for a moment, think he is a dishonest man, even when he seems misguided.

My question: When our prime minister phoned Mr. Bush immediately when the disaster struck, why did it take 4 days before Mr. Bush would give Canada permission to assist in New Orleans and the whole disaster area? Canada could not act unilaterally due to protocol. Individuals can, but countries can't. Some 50 countries offered immediate assistance and all were refused. The reported response was that the USA could handle it.

Since approval was granted, Canada despatched 4 ships, loaded with equipment, supplies and 1200 men to assist in the area, 3 helicopers and a jet airliner to transport displaced persons.

Bottom line; We must learn to separate the debater from the topic debated. We must stick with the topic and not assume that everyone hates the other person. We could accomplish much more if we act together rather than pull each other apart.

I beleive, if true, this will all come out in an investigation. I would like to know exactly who the mayor of N.O. called and when. What was the immediate response of the person he contacted. What was the governor of the states immediate response and who did she get in contact with. Why wasnt their evacuation plan put into place. If the people of New Orleans, who didnt have cars, were given an opportunity to evacuate, then how can anyone be responsible for their plight?
If we learn anything from this mess it will be that when we are told to leave, we better leave. Dont take lightly the awesome power of these storms. If they were told that there was a nuclear missile on its way there would have been mobs of people running down I 10 to get the heck out.
