Bush Mom: Everyone Wants To Move To Texas

Former first lady and mother to President Bush said Monday that evacuees from New Orleans have found a home in Houston.

"Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to Houston," Barbara Bush told NPR.

"What I’m hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this (she chuckles slightly)--this is working very well for them."

I'm sure that Mrs. Bush didn't mean anything bad by this, and that she had the best of intentions with her statement, but I am sure there will be many who will attack her because of these comments.

I think the lesson should be always think before you speak, and if you are in the public eye, always let your publicist review any comments you make to the media.

I know why they want to live in Texas. Texas is a great place to live. I was born and reared there.

I agree she probably spoke without thinking first, but please tell me this. Wouldn't you be offended if you were poor and underprivileged? I mean be realistic, how does going from living in your own home, apartment, room, etc., to living on a 2x6 cot with thousands of other evacuees work out nice? I'm sure everyone is thankful but she did make a pretty stupid remark. Again, for the record, I do not think she purposely tried to offend.

I disagree with her...If all those folks in the Astrodome were to come to Arkansas...they would much rather be here...I am sure of it. :D

Trees, Mountains, home cookin', nice weather. I would never choose Houston over where I am now.

And she is kind enough to go and spend some time with them. But we like to pick people apart. Much more fun then finding the good in someone. Go figure.

We need to remember that this is an 80 year old woman who is trying to give praise to our city for the outpouring of support. The sad thing is, she is probably not far from the truth. I would bet that many of these folks do not, ordinarily, live in sanitary conditions, with 3 square meals a day, good shelter, and working a/c to beat the heat. The Astrodome and other facilities offer all of these things to these people.

Looking through the eyes of the evacuees, I would be a little ticked too, but from the eyes that I have, the eyes of a Houstonian who is trying his best to help these folks, Mrs. Bush's comments are taken as encouragement for what my city and its people are doing. It uplifts us to think that, not only are we providing a relief for flood victims, but the conditions we have provided probably are indeed better than many of them had in their homes before.

Of course, most politically motivated people are not smart enough to see both sides of the situation before they will attack Mrs. Bush for her comments.

Her statement is honest. A number of the clients at our shelter have expressed a desire to move to Texas. They have stated that they are impressed with the attitude of the volunteers, that they want jobs, that they want homes, and that they feel they might have a better support system here.

I'm sure that a lot of this is a reaction to the disaster and that the feelings will eventually pass. Right now, a lot of them feel that LA let them down and cast them aside.

Also, understand that it IS working better for some of them. When we set up the shelters we made arrangements for their kids to get into quality schools, and we set up "career" and "work force" officers to help them find work.

If they were makin $8,000 in LA with jobs, Texas IS a better deal. Our state welfare program actually does a very good job of taking care of clients. The catch is - it doesn't last forever. You have to be actively seeking work or you get cut off.

Under Welfare Reform that is the way it is in all states, and you can only receive welfare for five years out of your entire lifetime.

With that being said, I am not at all disagreeing that Texas is a better place. Anything is better than LA. I have also heard of many people who will never go back, and want to live elsewhere.

The Texans are sure doing a good job of making their state the place to settle down though. You guys are doing one heck of a job at making sure everyone is well cared for. :D

Well, thank you.
The truth is, a LOT of wonderful states are doing a lot of wonderful things.
New Mexico had people drive for hours and hours just to get to Texas to help people who were sent to our shelters.
Florida is doing an amazing job.
Georgia is doing an amazing job.
Mississippi and Alabama have their own problems and yet they are kicking in.
New York sent money, then took in people.

I know there are states all over the country doing everything they can, and I would never set Texas up over any of them. I love Texas, but I greatly admire those who are NOT the neighbors of LA who are doing just as much.

The people of Houston have a special interest in helping the evacuees. We were faced with a similar, albeit not nearly as drastic, situation in 2001. Much of our city was underwater, and we received immense support from people and governments throughout the U.S. I can not say enough good things about the Red Cross because of that and other flooding incidents in our area.

We have been there, so we feel a particular obligation to help those who are facing the same, and in many cases a worse, situation.

I believe our great city would welcome the proposed new citizens of Houston with open arms.

The good thing is, all of the criminals are still back in NO, so we are only getting the good seeds. Good for us, huh? ;)

Texas excels in everything.

A Texan was up in Canada, bragging about how everything was bigger and better in Texas. The Canadian got sick of it and took him out to Niagara Falls.

"There. You got anything like that in Texas?"

"Naw... but we got a plumber who could fix that thang in about half an hour!"
