Buy products "Made in the USA"

My son was overseas, near Korea, Japan and such, what we consider very, very low wages, is not actually that low to the people that live there. In other words, if someplace in this world the rate of pay is $1000 a day but our rate of pay is only $100 a day, it would seem to the $1000 a day people that we are slave labor. I don't think the real reason American companies go to other countries to have their products made is just for one reason, there are matters like laws, taxes and unions, that push up their production costs also. A lot less pain to go somewhere else, in other words, it's our own fault we have lost these jobs to overseas workers. It's just my opinion.

We produce a lot of gas and oil in Wyoming, but it is cheaper to pump in in Venezuela, put it in tankers, refine it in Galveston and pump it back to the West.

Worried about supporting S Korea by buying a Hyundai Sonata a few years back. But worse than that . . . it came from TORONTO.

That's right. Made in Canada.

After they harbored all those pinko hippies during the Vietnam War, I would rather boycott Canada than Korea . . .

Why not over-tax iports and give a break on exports?

Well let's see. One, raises prices for everyone. Not good for your purchasing power and not good for the economy. Two, this would hurt the economies of other countries which reduces their ability to purchase our exports and therefore continues to hurt our economy and put American manufacturing workers out of work. More ominously, the poorer the foriegn contries are the more likely they are to either need our assistance (at best) costing us money or to descend into deeper poverty and American resentment (at worst) which could lead to more Afganistans. Just what we need, a few dozen more countries trying to produce the next Osama. In the long run, the best result for everyone comes from reducing trade barriers. We do need to take steps to help workers who lose their jobs. But we gain nothing by protecting a few jobs with tariffs while we cost many more jobs from theresulting high prices.

Interestingly, although the US is the forefront of technology, the only hybrid vehicles in mass production are the Honda Insight, the Honda Civic, and the Toyota Prius.

You'da thunk that American companies would have beaten 'em to it.

In America things are never simple. There are government, tax, politics considerations in every decision. Look how long it took the tobacco industry to do the right thing. Lobbyist...their interests...there's allot to consider in areas that we may not even be partially aware of as to why America doesn't make Hybrid cars....yet.
