All Calvinists including myself belive in Acts 17:30 and other passages which command people to repent and believe .

I doubt you have known all Calvinists because I have known some who do not share their faith and others who wonder if they are saved.

You think that the doctrines of Calvinism are false .

Even Calvin hismself wrote that if his theology were taken too far it would cause trouble.

If you believe everything some Calvinists attribute to Calvin then you would not pray and share your faith. Their opinion is that there is no need.

Instead of saying nasty things about him , why not read him for yourself -- then I can expect you to be honest and retract your unfounded remarks .

Give me direct quotes of what you charge him with .

I am not obligated to believe what some Calvinists say about Calvin .( Or who you claim are Calvinists ) .My beliefs come from the Bible . Do you understand that ?

No need for "for instances" we can end any further conversations. You need to rethink your understanding of election and see the doctrine from God's view and not Calvin's.

If you knew the truth, you would not believe as you do. If there is any obstacle in your way it is the truth.

Good luck

The disease is spreading . I do not base my biblical views on what John Calvin wrote . I do not consult him before I post to see if we "line up" .

I know the way , the TRUTH and the life . Christ is not an obstacle in my way -- He is my God , Savior and Guide .

Stop with your nastiness . If you object to something I espouse get specific -- back it up with what you think the Bible states on the matter and go from there .

I cannot say that I follow a man such as Calvin and attribute my theology to him but rather a serious study of God and his word.

If your beliefs are from the Bible then why call your self a Calvinist? Calvin is just a man. I do not find Calvin in the Bible. Unless you have a different translation that I do my Bible commands me to folow Christ. No man can serve two masters. How can you call yourself a Calvinist and a Christian? Calvin is a man and Christ is God. There is a huge difference.

I own all Calvin's commentaries and both volumes of the Institutes.

That is how I can write from knowledge rather ignorance.

Have you read any of Calvin's works? Or have you read and listened to what others said about him? It is amazing what is attributed to Calvin that he did not write.

I do not follow Calvin , but Christ . I do not attribute my theology to him . The Bible is my source . John Calvin was one such man that God caused to raised up for the benefit of His Kingdom .

I serve Christ , not Calvin . I call myself a Christian . I am secondarily a Calvinist . That identifies my theological orientation . I don't believe I have to explain myself to the extent that I have for someone who has been on the BB as long as you have .

This I find to be incredible . You own "all" of Calvin's commentaries as well as The Institutes . Yet you speak so unintelligently about the issue . You defame the man and abhor the doctrines he taught . With your attitude why don't you burn his works ?!

My books are scattered to the winds .Here in South Korea I have a few of his works . His Institutes are back in the States .

Yes , I have read books and articles by men who are scholars deal with Calvin . ( It's very different than the websites which debase him so with no remorse .)

Yes , it is amazing what is attributed to Calvin that which he did not write or preach . Have you been guilty of the same ?

The Bible teaches election.

1Pe 1:2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.

The Bible teaches man is responsible.

Act 17:30 "Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,

The Bible teaches man can resist the Holy Spirit.

Mat 23:37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under [her] wings, but you were not willing!

The Bible teaches that God reveals Himself to all people.

Rom 1:21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify [Him] as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Election, free will, responsibility are all a part of God's plan and we have to accept each one even though they do not seem to be compatible.

Someday we will not see dimly as we do now, but God will reveal all things to us and we will understand. But for now, we have to accept all things through faith whether we understand them or not.

Very true and great post.

Hopefully being a Baptist is never the same thing as following the teachings of a man. It does seem to be getting more and more that way though. It seems that people are following men more and more rather than studying the Bible for themselves and following Christ.

I am not at all defined by "Baptist" but I am defined by being a Christian. I do not follow Mr. Baptist (whoever that is) but Christ . I have never preached being a Baptist nor taught it, but Christ. I have never taught what Baptists believe but what the Bible teaches. They should be the same but they are not always. Over the years I have shared Christ with people who claim to be Baptist but are not a believer. Some were even members of a Baptist church. Baptists vary a lot in doctrine. Some are charismatic while others are legalistic. I pastored a church once that had a regular practice of inviting the Mormon bishop teach. The Bible makes it quite clear what a Christian is but not what a Baptist is. I do not see anywhere in the Bible where it says to follow "Baptists" but Christ.

Interestingly the only place in the world where I was lregularly abelled as a Baptist was in the south.

Without the Institutes of the Christian Religion written by John Calvin (written when Calvin was 26 years old...one year after he converted to "Protestantism"), the entire theology of TULIP and Calvinism would fall flat on its face. It's not necessary to mention the Institutes...the theology permeates this thread and all other threads concerning Calvinism.

All I can say is,

Really, I laughed out loud when I read this. I'm not laughing at you my sister. Those of us who hold to what is called the doctrines of grace, especially in this day and age, derived them from the Scriptures. At least I did. I have Calvin's works. Many of them in fact. I have not read most of them, but what I have read shows him to be a brillant theologian.

Have you read his writings? If not, why would you be so quick to use his writings in a negative manner?

I agree biut we must also remember he was smart enough to recognize the shortcomings of his own theology if carried too far. Some do not seem to recognize though.

Ann,

The person said, and I quote: “If you do not believe in election then you deny the Bible.”

To even make such a statement is arrogant and prideful.

Dave
You misread my post.
I will assume it was because I was not clear and I will hopefully clear up what I meant.

I said you must believe in election t believe the Bible because the Bible teaches election.
Now, you do not have to believe exactly as Spurgeon did ON election but you can't deny the word is there.

Just like baptism. You can't believe in the Bible and not believe in Baptism. You may believe in sprinkling or you may believe in immersion but you must believe in some form of baptism or you don't believe the Bible.

back to election, I didn't not say that you must believe as I do on the subject to be a bible believer.
However, you must believe election is true in some form because the Bible talks about it.

He overstepped that one a bit . However , those who deny such a prominent Bible doctrine when it stares them in the face in a multitude of passages -- these folks are the arrogant ones . They think they know better than the Lord on some matters . They think that the teaching of election in Scripture is too severe , so they want to expunge it . Failing that they try to minimize , sweep it under the rug or even denounce it using coarse language .
Rippon, see my explanation above. You may not have seen it. If you had, you would not say I over stepped.

I have never read the first word of Calvin or anything attributed to him from websites, zilch, nada. That said, he and I believe alot of the same things. I believe in election because I get it from Scripture. I'm not a "calvinist." He believed like me, maybe he was a Jerryist.

So Spurgeon believed that people would reject the Savior and go into eternal perdition.

In order for one to reject something, that something had to be offered to the one rejecting it.

So, Christ was offered to the one who rejected Him... the rejection not by God's design, but because of man's free will to choose.

John 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

Interestingly enough, those who had this statement spoken to them did not even believe Moses, or they would have believed Christ.

It is also significant to note these same are said by Christ to NOT have the word of God in themselves therefore they do not believe in him whom God has sent.

Look it up and correct me, but I believe the Bible teaches even our believing is 'the work' of God; check John 6.
