Since the adoption of the 1934 Trade Agreements Act, the United States government has engaged in a free trade policy which has destroyed or endangered important segments of our domestic agriculture and industry, undercut the wages of our working men and women, and totally destroyed or shipped abroad the jobs of hundreds of thousands of workers. This free trade policy is being used to foster socialism in America through welfare and subsidy programs.

Looks like the Establishment is trying to twist some arms like they did to get the Medicare prescription drug bill passed.

Does passage of CAFTA require a majority of the House members(434 with one vacancy) or will a plurality do?

Two GOP Reps didn't vote, if they were leaning to voting Nay, they could have caused a tie.

Leviathan wins. I didn't catch the final breakdown by party but as of yesterday only 6 Democrats were in favor but 15 voted aye, and 25 Republicans were to vote against but I didn't see the last count but I think 27 Republicans voted no.

At least the Establishment couldn't muster a clear majority of the seated House members but had to settle for a plurality.

    Here's how everyone voted -

    http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2005/roll443.xml

My representative, Mike Ross, voted no. The Arkansas GOP representative, Boozman, voted yes. The other two Arkansas Democrats split - Berry voting no and Snyder voting yes.

Congressman Sherrod Brown prediction in USA Today was pretty accurate:

"If the House of Representatives passes the Central American Free Trade Agreement, it will take place in the middle of the night, the normal 15-minute roll call will be extended to about three hours so that House leaders can twist arms, and the legislation will pass by one or two votes."

    Source: USA Today

The vote did take place in the middle of the night, the normal 15-minute roll call was exteneded to just over one hour so that they House leaders and the Bush administration could twist arms and the legislation passed by only two votes.
