Hi Martin. I disagree, and here's just one example why.
A quote from the article and the link provided.
"
Thirdly, it is because grounding the warrant of faith on inward impressions overthrows the order of grace. Although divine election is before faith, only after faith do people know their election. It is genuine, saving faith which marks people out as the objects of God’s loving choice. ‘As many as were ordained to eternal life believed’ (Acts 13.48)." --END QUOTE
"As many who were ordained to eternal life believed". Who were they? This is yet another case of many, I'm afraid, where Calvinism defines these passages individually on an Island, instead of in it's proper context. These were true OT believers, just like Abraham. And like Abraham, by faith, they were "credited" to salvation by promise. This promise is realized in Christ Jesus only. It is by hearing the Gospel and believing (because they were already ordained to eternal life through their OT faith), that those promises are realized. Only by the baptism with the Holy Spirit, which places them into Christ Jesus, could those Promises be realized.
Even if you took the word 'appointed', or 'ordained' from Acts 13:48 to be, or include God foreknowing everything from the foundations of the world, it would not, and should not be considered 'predestined', as in God caused it by His choice to elect you to come to faith from the foundations of the world. These OT believers were predestined, as sheep, given to the Son by the Father, from an OT faith to a NT faith. God does predestine OT believers who are owed the promise to be NT believers because that's the only way that the promise can be realized. (Romans 8:28-30/1 Corinthians 8:3).
Heres' context of Acts 2:38. These were not atheists, they were true OT believers. BTW, just for the record, by definition, Calvinism declares that these OT believers are already born again and justified.
Acts 13:16 Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, "Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen:
Acts 13:26 Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham (physical Israel), and those among you who fear God (True OT believers), to you the word of this salvation has been sent.
Acts 13:43 Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
With that context, read...
Acts 13:48 Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.
It reads a little bit different, doesn't it? Likewise goes the rest of TULIP.
Our election is with Christ when we're in Christ. He is the elect. There is no elect without being in Christ. If you're in Christ then you're already saved. Jesus is the predestined way, the chosen Vessel of our salvation from the foundations of the world. We become elect with Him when we're placed into Him, just like when we identify with His death, dying with Him, and His resurrection, being raised up with Him, born again, when we're placed into Him.
Isaiah 42:1 "Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.
1 Peter 2:4-5 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious,
you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 1:4-6 just as He chose us
in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,
having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,
to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
We become chosen because we're united with Jesus, the Chosen one, the "Beloved". The promise is not to "seeds" as in many but "Seed" as in
One, Jesus. He's the Chosen, the elect. We become chosen/elect with Him when we're in Him.
This is how we become elect. The placing into with the Holy Spirit, AKA, the baptism with the Holy Spirit. A baptism by faith.
Galatians 3:22-29 But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed.
Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed (one with Jesus), and heirs according to the promise.
