Can saved people drink alchoholic wine and really be saved?

This has been hinted at so many times I would like to get it out in the open:

Do you that believe that:

A. All wine, even in a small amount is intoxicating and
B. That wine is evil and sinful in any amount
C. THose who regularly dink are probably not even saved?


I know we are not supposed to question peoples salvation specifically on this board but please, keep it to my question.
I can handle the challenge.
In this case, please answer in a "if the shoe fits" kind of way. Not personal, just what you believe.

I would like honesty on this topic.

Since God's Word says "Look thou not" I am willing to state that God's definition of how much it takes one to get drunk is much lower than that of those who advocate drinking in moderation.

I voted that I didn't like any of the options...

It is not up to me to judge another's servent.

Denying Christ is the only thing that will keep you out of Heaven... to put other conditions on salvation is works...

And unless a person trusts Christ completely they are going to Hell.

Drinking will not send a person to Hell, unbelief in the finished work of Christ will... Drinking may make them go to Hell faster if they don't believe Christ's blood has enough saving power in it to save them though.

No, because I am not convinced that a Christian that has a glass of wine at a nice dinner should be called a carnal Christian.
I know SFIC will disagree, and that is alright, but Jesus had wine.. did that make him carnal?

Although I selected it is "a blessing from God that should be used in moderation," that is just the closest option I could see for tonight. I don't think there is anything wrong with having the occasional drink, but I think the way that particular option is worded almost conveys a mandate to drink in moderation, which is wrong also. If someone feels convicted that they should never drink a drop of alcohol, then they should not drink even a drop of alcohol. If another person feels that it is okay to drink in moderation, they should not be condemned for doing so. The only thing specifically condemned in the Bible is drunkenness, so that is the only thing I have a problem with; because of that, I say alcoholics should definitely never drink a drop of alcohol, as one drink will lead to another and another. For those, like myself, who can drink a glass of wine/winecooler, or two, and not be affected, there is no drunkenness, so there is no Biblical issue. :thumbs:

I am biased on the alcohol issue because I grew up with a father who was a drunkard and spent his paycheck at the bar instead of on food and clothing...which led to a divorce and a broken home.

I did not get saved until I was in my thirties, and unfortunately found myself following in my dad's footsteps. I was not a drunkard, but I did drink socially once a week.

When I got saved, I immersed myself in God's Word as I was determined to leave my old life behind. Drinking was a part of that old life, so I stopped.

Today, it is a preference of mine not to drink. I do not judge those who do because I used to do the same thing, but I do not allow it in my home.

I am sure there are people who can drink one drink and stop. I was not one of those people.

I believe God's Word says no to alcohol, but it also says it is good for health reasons. I'm just going to leave this one up to God.

As far as being saved and having a drink. That has nothing to do with salvation, however, I would have to say that I do not understand why people drink if they are saved. I can get much higher on the Spirit than I ever could on spirits.

There are many questions I would like to ask Jesus when I get to Heaven, but I have a feeling that when we get to Heaven, all of these do's and dont's are not going to matter because For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

I am sure there are people who can drink one drink and stop. I was not one of those people.

But there are a bunch of us who are. In fact, I usually don't even finish a glass of wine when it is served to me and I rarely even pour a full serving if I have control over how much I receive.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have no intention of "getting high" or intoxicated when I drink a glass of wine. I drink it for the health benefits and as a complement to a meal. I very carefully avoid drinking enough wine to have any intoxicating effect on my body. I've never had "a buzz", I've never been drunk, and I've never had any interest in getting drunk. And I don't associate drinking with my life before I became a follower in Jesus since I was converted at 13 and had my first drink at 33.

Thank you for telling your story. I respect the issues you have faced in your life journey and certainly respect your valid and wise reasons for not using alcoholic beverages. Furthermore, I appreciate the humble and respectful tone of your post. :thumbs:

I thought briefly of choosing the "wine is a blessing . . ." option.

But is wine truly a blessing from God? Is Tequila?

I suppose one could get into a "slippery slope" argument here. Is the poppy seed and marijuana a blessing from God? Both are "all natural" and have legitimate medicinal uses and both are much less toxic than alcohol. (If I had to pick an addiction, I would take narcotics over alcoholism any day)

Then again, I sure do enjoy a bottle of Tapestry with a steak.

I voted for none of the above because, like SFIC in a VERY limited way, voting doesn't mean anything. But I don't see anything in Scripture to forbid drinking wine. But there are lots of reasons, especially for a Pastor, not to drink.

But I am not going to judge another man's servants. Romans 14:1-4. btw, it's very interesting that the weaker brother there is the one who CANNOT eat meat. In our day, we tend to see someone who thinks it's wrong as the stronger brother. But the fact is they are both brothers and I stand with my family rather than against my family.

The Word of God clearly forbids a child of God to drink alcohol. To say the Lord Jesus desecrated His High Priestly office by indulging in a intoxicateing drink in John 2 is incorrect. The statement Paul made to Timothy in ITim.5 is refering to purely medicinal purposes. If one would review the posts of the "drinkers" you would find they drink to satisfy "their" fleshly desire. The Bible reminds us to live our life so as not to hinder a person from coming to Christ or to cause a new Christian to fall. I am reminded of Nathan in II Samuel when he told David because of what he did he caused the enemies of God to blaspheme. The next time you are "indulging" remember it's not Nathan looking over your shoulder!1Co 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

I have seen this claim, that the wine that Jesus made at the wedding in Cana was not alcoholic, in several places on the BB. I've read the passage several times, and I don't see it. So, I would be interested in hearing explanations.

In the interest of full disclosure, I do drink a little (probably the equivalent of a couple of six-packs per year on the average). I did not grow up with any kind of alcohol in the house, so I never thought about it. My wife's family had at least one example of a family member who was a drunk, but we drink so little that it has never been an issue.

I see the biblical evidence as mixed. It condemns abuse, but not use per se.

I think that some folks on this Board are feeling a little guilty about what they had to drink on New Year's Eve. How else do you explain all these threads asking the same question about wine and it's use.
IMHO the use of the word "wine" in todays terms is not the same as it was used in Solomon or Jesus' time. Wine in it's original context was juice of the vine or grape. It could refer to juice just stomped or squeezed which would be "new wine" or referred to as fermented. It is up to you to decide how you should use it and to make that decision you must pray and study the Word of God. Get into your Bible and trust the Holy Spirit to guide you.
Stop asking what popular opinion has to say about it. It is not popular to say that it is a sin to drink alcoholic beverages these days and those that have stood up and spoke God's Word about the alcoholic use of wine have been threaten with removal from this Board. Personally I'd rather be cast out of Baptist Boards than risk being erased from the Book of Life.
Repent now folks for nipping at the Champagne. Renew you heart for the things of God and you shall do well.

Exactly! it is the only balanced approach.
It is the only concept that fits the entirety of Scripture.

Why? Cause I just didn't get around to getting any.

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
