On FB, a pastor stated:
"We do not alter our services for the NFL - we still believe in the altar!"

Several agreed with him

I then stated:
"and yet - what an opportunity to bring people into a church service and share the Gospel! Many have been born again thu this ministry."

The pastor answered:
"it is never right to do wrong to do right. Never should we alter worship services to accommodate the world. There is nothing in the NFL that warrants showing the game in a church, but there is plenty Biblical reason not to do it."

I responded with:
"okay what Scriptures would you say that make showing the SB to be unBiblical."

The pastor answered:
"Every Scripture on modesty, every Scripture on alcohol, every Scripture on holiness, every scripture against worldliness, every Scripture to avoid the ways of the world in church, every scripture against filthy language, Pillar and ground of the truth, I could preach 7-8 sermons on this topic very easily why we should not bring the world into the church. The church is for believers, most soulwinning should be outside the church. (many verses on that) Every verse on pride, every verse on ... etc! Jesus would have chased it out with the money changers. This is seriously a non-debatable subject for a Biblicist! Frankly, FB does not allow that much content in a post!"

So what are your thoughts about the answers the pastor gave me.

Note: I did NOT edit one bit of the statements made by myself or that of the pastor. The ONLY thing I Ieft off was the name of the pastor.

I disagree with the pastor....except half-time shows.
and that is when you have the devotion.

Besides where does the Bible require us to have an Sunday evening worship service?

The other preacher is 100% right. NOTHING Godly about the Super Bowl. It would be a disgrace and a Shame to show that garbage at church.

You could put in a dance floor, bar, bring in some strippers, and try to reach alcoholic porn addicts.

He is also correct about the Church being for believers and soul winning is to be done outside the church. MacArthur was fired up about that a while back.

My church just knows that some of the Sunday night regulars will not be at our church on Superbowl night.

We still have church - come that night or not.

I am not in favor of playing the Superbowl game at church to draw people in.

Agree with consensus here that the church has NO affiliation with sports in a church service. Church is 100% for the edification of the believer, not waving pennants for a favorite team.

But outside of church services, sports (events, games, teams, TV, trips, parties, softball league) may, of course, fit in the program of activities.

Don't think any here would say having a church bowling or softball team playing other churches . . . or a men's group going to a Packer game . . . or teens in the YMCA basketball league or any such . . . would be wrong. NOT on a Sunday. NOT part of any "worship". Although going to the shrine of St Vincent of Lombardi was a "pilgrimage" of sorts

Do recall our Christian School team playing in a private school league, and in the bulletin it read, "Root for our Faith boys' team as they try to beat Christ the King".

I don't see anything wrong with church league sports. I also see little real difference between men's group going to NFL game and them going to a bar.

I don't know of any churches around here that even have Sunday evening services any more.

The Superbowl doesn't belong in the church nor the church in the Superbowl... That is not to say on both teams, there are not believers, with God given talent who do not play in it... Look at post interview with Aaron Donald... God is great, God is great... Doesn't sound like a unsaved football player to me... Now I'm not a betting man but I would say, Aaron Donald won't be long in going to church and thanking God for his many blessings... Brother Glen:)
