Cheney-Edwards Debate

Since we rehashed Bush-Kerry I; what are the thoughts/predictions on tonight's debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards?

I think Cheney will win, but it will not be a blow-out like many on this board think.

This could be a brawl. The VPs are often used as attack dogs, to say what the Presidential candidates cannot without sullying themselves. Cheney is well-known for being mean (what did he say to the Senator who extended his hand in reconcilliation?), but Edwards is sharp, quick and outspoken. Isn't there some old joke about the difference between a pack of Dobermans & a pack of lawyers?

Generally speaking Edwards is not like even in North Carolina; if he was not V.P. candidate he would have to go back to the practice of law. Chaney will have all the basis covered, but Edwards will still prattle his half truths/half lies eloquently.

Yes, if Cheney is good at something, it's chewing. He doesn't seem to do much spiting...you can tell that be looking at him.

Don't believe everything the TV tells you. Cheney is in actuality quite a nice person, I'm told. Dry wit, apt to smile...

... and Edwards reminds me of Damien from "The Omen."

But that's just my subjective imression...

Don't believe everything the TV tells you. Cheney is in actuality quite a nice person, I'm told. Dry wit, apt to smile...

Apt to spew out a "$&#* $%&" at folks who don't go along with him.

A real fun guy.

I once watched an Arkansas lawyer filet a hostile expert witness who attempted to get aggressive with him, smiling and cordial, all the while.

If Cheney tries to get ugly, he'll probably damage Bush severely. I figure his plan to to show us the "new, friendly" Dick Cheney.

I figure Edwards will be trying to get Dick to be himself.

The dislike for John Edwards in North Carolina is highly over-rated by some conservative radio talk show hosts. All the polls in NC before he announced he was running for President were showing him winning re-election for his Senate seat. He might not have enough popularity to give the Presidential contest in NC to the Democrats for the first time since 1976, but he will make it closer than in 2000.

Cheney shouldn't underestimate him....but all in all I expect the debate to be anti-climatic. Cheney supporters will think he won, Edwards supporters will think he won. I don't think it will be as clear who the winner is like it was like week.

Not to worry, tp; I haven't believed everything on TV since I was 3 years old.

Who tells you Cheney is nice in person?

I think Cheney will do well. He knows his position and can defend it. He has a sly, low-key wit which sneaks up on opponents and subjects them to gentle, but effective ridicule. Too bad Cheney is not the one debating Kerry!

One question that is sure to surface is the comments by the guy who was the head of US operations in Iraq until power was turned over to the interim Iraqui government. The Washington Post reported today that the gentleman said that, from the start, the US has not had enough troops on the ground in Iraq. That is Kerry's position (or at least it was yesterday...) and I will be interested to see how Cheney answers that charge.

Cheney was a bit evasive and tried to reframe the questions to fit his talking points.

He was a lot less unpleasant than I expected. And he seemed guarded and tentative.

Edwards seemed a bit too eager to get to each issue. I haven't paid much attention to him, and I was suprised how animated he is.

I suppose the high point of the evening was when Cheney described Kerry as "not consistent" and Edwards recited a long litany of Bush flip-flops.
